Driver With Knife Leaps From Overpass
Sacramento, Caliornia - A 34-year-old Stockton man driving recklessly set off a three-car collision, got out of his car and began stabbing himself, then jumped to his death from the elevated Capital City Freeway on Tuesday night.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Polanco said the driver was speeding and cutting lanes of traffic when he crashed his car into a guard rail at about 8:35 p.m. above Q Street. The crash caused a three-car pile-up.
The man then got out of his car and began brandishing a hunting knife at people involved in the collision and from an ambulance that stopped to administer aid, Polanco said. Traffic slowed to a crawl.
The shirtless man began to stab himself and slumped semi-conscious over the guard rail on the east side of the freeway. Polanco said that when a Sacramento police officer approached, the man began to struggle and then jumped about 50 feet to a parking lot below.
The man's identity was not immediately available. There were no other injuries.
