I can't remember how old I was but I'm pretty sure it was the Exorcist or the Omen. Both of them scared the shit out of me...

i dont know if it was the first ... maybe the 1st i saw in a theatre .. but it was the british horror anthology Tales From the Crypt (1972) which would put me at 11 years old.
it scared the living shit out of me. I actually told my friend i had to go to the bathroom and stayed in the lobby (for the blind man and the walls full of razorblades sequence.)
I still remember how this movie nearly gave me a heart attack.
I own it now ... i had to see it again years later and although i've seen hundreds worse (if i saw it now for the 1st time it would be laughable) but it still stirs that old feeling.
I remember when i stopped being afraid .. we went to an all night drive in .. a horror marathon that included Dawn of the Dead and The Prowler, the origional TCM, among others.
The first movie scared me, the second not so much ... and by the last movie i was having a laugh. I was probably 18 or 19 at that time.

Probably "The Blob" starring Steve MeQueen when it was in first run!
I know when I was just a tyke the parental units took me to the drive-ins [ are there any left? ] to see The Wolfman 1966....that was probabaly my first horror movie.....I guess I was about 8. But the first one to give me nightmares was The Shuttered Room...1967...with Gig Young...surely you people remember Gig Young. It wasen't even really a horror movie but something about it just kinda stuck and creeped into my dreams.

it was only a scene, but it was from The Gate. when the monster thingy moves through the walls and makes the bumps, then when the kid gets out of his bed and the hand shoots out and grabs him
i didn't want to sleep in my room for months heh. scared the shit outta me

Hmm, am I the the one who discovered horror the oldest ??
I was 13 and a friend of my brother's called him up and told us to come over, 'cos he had a couple of movies we should definitely watch : Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead...
That camera moving through the woods absolutely terrified me and Dawn... kind of disgusted me, but I was definitely hooked for life.
Just as an aside : I wouldn't let my kid watch the movies I do. I mean... Friday the 13th at 3/4 ?? She likes shark movies, though, except "Jaws 2", which doesn't have enough action.:D

no, i wouldnt let my kid watch horror movies at a young age.
its fucking rediculous. Ours is 4.
My kid loved dinosaurs but we wont let him watch jurrasic park unless we're there to fast forward through the scary parts.
i think by 13 you should have developed a decent understanding of reality vs fantasy. And hopefully wont end up with nightmares.
Kids up to 10 years old act out the shit they see on tv .. ninja turtles, batman, etc. I dont want to watch my 4 year old try to saw the head off his buddies.

It's so hard to say, because horrific images permeate our media. But I remember something I saw at an early age (six or seven) that I thought was really messed up: "The Thing That Couldn't Die."
This was a movie about some people on a farm who are dowsing for water and come across an old box buried in the dirt. The box contains the severed head of a warlock! And it's STILL ALIVE!!!! And if you look into its eyes, it hypnotizes you! It wants the people on the farm to help it get back together with its body, which is buried somewhere else...it starts to control the people, one by one.............
This movie had a seriously palpable feeling of supernatural dread. I mean, you could feel the head's evil influence. I haven't seen it in years, and maybe it is a much tamer film by today's standards, but MAN, it was really messed up back then. Supposedly this was done on MST3K, but I think they ruined what is basically a good low budget flick.

I totally agree with you. My kid loves dinosaurs too, but Jurassic Pak is still too much for her. And it's so clear that words like "dead" and "kill" do not have the same significance to her, as if they're just phases that you go through, and live on afterwards. But this is a very complicated issue and I wouldn't wanna spoil the thread.

The first horror movie I watched was when I was twelve. It was the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don't mean like right when it came out, but I watched it in the mid 80's somewhere, because the third one came out and I thought it looked cool, so I rented the first two. I saw Friday The 13th part 2 in the movie theater when I was six or seven with my dad, he was a big fan of horror movies...he didn't want to take me but I begged and begged and begged until he did...I remember sitting in the theater watching it being scared shitless, but at the same time I thinking it was cool as hell..
Then we got a VCR a year or two later and I used to get my dad to take me to the local video store every chance i could to rent a horror flick...that also remeinds me of how much I miss mom and pop video stores...Some of you younger kids may not remember any of these since we live in the world of Blockbusters...
I remember you used to be able to go in our local video store and find just about damn near any horror movie you could think of...
Can't do that these days, you have to sift through all of the bullshit hollywood new horror films to even find maybe a copy of something decent...

i remember the mom and pop places well..
the ones in my home town subscribed to a service where the movies would be recycled on a regular basis and the stuff they were send was often bottom of the barrel grade Z crap ... the stuff I loved.
Luckily i either taped it all (onto beta) or bought it - and thats why i have some of the funkiest old unheard of movies ever.

i know what you're saying but i'm not proud of it. my dad just thought it was a movie and that's all i thought it was of course i was freaked out way more than i would've been if i'd have seen it when i was 12 or 13 or whatever the suitable age is. it might have been a little careless on his part but he just honestly thought it was fun to watch horror films and i didn't turn into Jeffrey Dahmer or anything so what's the problem?
i know to someone older like you this probably sounds completely naive but it's just my opinion.

everyone is entitled to their opinion .. no probs ..
but there are a lot of kids it does affect ..
As a parent - i just cant imagine it ... and i am aware of everything my kid watches .. i watch everything with him ...
If i'm not sure about something i research it ..
I have the largest collection of horror movies of anyone i know .. sooner or later he's going to get exposure to them .. but not until he's had as 'innocent' a childhood for as long as possible .. and at a time where he's demonstarated that he can seperate reality from fantasy .. and can understand why such films would be made (and considered entertainment)
I've seen a lot of fucked up people in theatres cheering when 'the girl gets killed' etc ..
these kids needed to mature before being exposed to violent imagery...
i guarentee most of you - when/if you have a kid someday .. will wonder what the fuck your parents were thinking ..

I know I saw a lot of horror movies before this, but this one sticks out to me. I was about 4 or so when my dad watched this. It was not a big movie, I know that. There was this blonde girl, and some guy was telling her if she didn't have sex with this mutant thing he would take a saw to her. I just remeber him saying "sex or saw?" a few times, I don't remember what she did. Nice movie for a 4 year old to see huh? Anyway, anyone know what it is?

i agree with you i don't have a kid yet but i wouldn't let him/her watch alot of the stuff my dad let me watch although he did watch it with me and made sure i wasn't to terrified or influence by anything that was the way he did it but i know what you mean when i saw Freddy vs Jason there were people cheering when Freddy was about to do whatever it is he was about to do to the girl who was the main charactor and i thought it was kinda sick. now when freddy's doing his one liners and smart ass comments and jason just aimlessly walks around like a retard all that's fun and games i laugh my ass of at that myself but to cheer because somebody is about to be raped is sick and people like that probably were screwed up when they were younger by different types of ''unecseptable'' entertainment.
nobody is probably going to read all that shit so basicly i'm saying urge is right.

no - he's 4.
4 year olds dont understand people ripping their faces off ... children being lost into TV sets, bodys springing from the ground.
At 4 kids dont understand a lot.
there is no sense scaring the fucking shit out of a small child before they understand how things work.
I have seen simple things scare kids ... loss, being alone, etc ..
these things have a great impact on children ...
sure they'll get over it sooner or later .. maybe it wont bother them at all ..
is it worth the risk ?

I don't dress gothic or anything and I'm outgoing and funny are what people say and I'm fine.
If people get affected they should just die seriously that is the most stupid ass excuse I have ever heard....
You have absolutely no idea what it means to be a parent..
I mean I don't totally agree with completely sheltering a child, because I think that later on in life when they do find out about certain things they go hog wild with those things, as apposed to a kid that has be exposed to stuff at an early age...Now I'm not talking about sex or drugs or any of that stuff...There is a certain age or maturity level that kids should be taught about those things....
But taking away the innocence of a childs youth is def. not the thing to do...I mean cmon you're only a kid for a short while of your life...Let them cherish those years while they can, be it with "kid oriented' things as you say or whatever...
A lot of the problem with a lot of kids today is that their parents don't talk to them, they stick a game controller in their hand or plop them down in front of the damn television, which is fucking retarted...
On another note being popular and being loved at school is for the fucking birds, for one thing do you really think 99.9% of the people that you are so loved by are gonna give two shits about you when you leave there? I can pretty much answer that for ya...Fuck no.. They are gonna be worried about, college, working, maybe starting families of their own, or just plain out being a fucking bum for lack of a better term...believe me I've seen it...
Hopefully you will wisen up as you get older...
If not I hope you have a vasectomy in the near future...

thats the key right there.
the term 'lost innocense' doesn't mean the loss of one's virginity ..
it refers to the loss of the child ... the few precious years where you dont have the weight of the world on your shoulders .. where you dont yet experience the pain and filth and dissapointments of life (along with the good)
why expose them to horror and death and pain now ?
let them have fun being kids for the short few years that they have ... someone else will rob them of it sooner or later ..

Whoah i didnt mean to put it like im gonna make them watch that stuff but if they wanna watch im gonna let them.
And as far as them not having fun with death and pain and such.
You do, whats the dif if a kid likes it. I did when I was little. Just the horror aspect i love it not every kid is gonna be the same.
I dont have to be a parent to kow about kids, I was one myself, as you were. I'm gonna make sure they have a good life. But saying that they shouldnt watch horror movies just bc they are bad doesnt make much sense. That is how the world works they are always afraid. The whole blame horror movies, bands, video games. That is so dumb. I mean, I'm not gonna even mention horror movies to my kid until he/she wants to know. If they don't like them thats up to them. if they do. I'm not gonna stop them unless it gets bad.....

Yes I agree with you 100% urgeok. It's not just the kids it is also the parents. They need to know what is going on. My parents let me play M rated games watch horror movies and I am fine. It's not that they were bad parents, they knew what was goin on and they trustes me and I appreciate them for that. My parents are the best in the world IMO of course lol. And also in no way, shape or form am I going to push anything on them. I'm just going to give them freedom. Not ALL freedom but enough,

Just quoting myself . It has been bugging me ever since I brought this up, so i'm bringing it back up. Someone has to remember this movie....anyone:confused:

it was a television movie called The Midnight Hour. I remember one scene where a black vampire chick killed a distant relative in a wine cellar. The first on video tape may have been the original Nightmare on Elm Street and I think the first on television was Friday the 13th part 3. A local ABC station in Northwest TN. ran it as simply "Friday the 13th" one Halloween night.

I can't remember which I saw first, probably Part 2 but Friday the 13th Part 2 and 3 both scared the bejesus out of me when I was like 7 or 8. Of course Hee Haw probably scared me the most at that age but thats another story.
