Woman Murdered On Prince Of Wales Island, Community Shocked
Anchorage, Alaska - This weekend, a small community on Prince of Wales Island was rocked by a murder.
Alaska State Troopers say 48-year-old Lauri Waterman of Craig was kidnapped from her home in her own minivan early Sunday morning, by 24-year-old Brian Radel. Troopers say Radel drove to the middle of the island where he met up with 24-year-old Jason Arrant, then they allegedly murdered Waterman. Radel and Arrant then drove to the Thorne Bay area where they doused Waterman's body and van with gasoline and set it on fire, in effort to destroy the evidence.
Troopers say Waterman's daughter, 16-year-old Rachelle Waterman, asked Arrant to kill her mother and helped carry out the plan, even arranging to be out of town last weekend.
People on Prince of Wales Island, which is comprised of roughly 5,000 residents, say they're stunned something like this could happen there.
“I was born and raised in Hydaberg and this truly is a shock to the whole Prince of Wales Island. I’ve never seen anything happen like this before. Were all like one big family because were all connected by roads and everybody knows one another,” says resident Alma Cook.
Cook says Waterman was a caring person who worked for the local school district. Sunday, people from all over the island attended a memorial for Waterman at Craig High School.
Troopers say all three suspects have been charged with first-degree murder.
