I don't think sound existed until sometime in the late 30's....Up until then, the world was a silent place.....Those were the times.....No ranting, no raving.....Just peace and quiet......

It should have music though, shouldnt it?

Modestas, dont worry about missing the dialogue. Movies that old had none.

So, if you kill someone in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does the victim make a sound?

Im in a good mood, so Ill try to explain this without insulting you.

In older times movies didnt have dialogue. The story was told through the actions on the screen and the occasional words displayed for the viewer to read.

So as far as sound goes, your version is fine

Figures. The one time someone is actually talking about a movie that WOULD fit in the classics folder, and it's in the wrong folder...

these days you might as well start any topic here and move it later ... its the only chance anyone would see it (with the exception of the 7 or 8 people who actually frequent the other forums

I try to check out the other forums, but the action in the General forum is far superior than anywhere else on the site.......

i always check the other forums .. all the time .. but they are usually pretty stale ... one post there (combined) for every 50 in the general forum.

dont get me wrong .. i love goofing around in general (I'm a lover, not a fighter : ok, i'm a clown, not a lover or a fighter)

but i really like discussing film more than anything..

I saw this film screened about a year ago, and I was fairly impressed. This was done after "Nosferatu," and it had a huge budget. From what I could tell, its "environment" was completely constructed--it was all huge sets and backdrops, with nothing of the "real world" visible at any time. Very lavish production. I recommend it!

Huge budget meaning what? $1000? :D Must have been easy back in the day to make a good movie......Now everyone has their "standards"......

Well, actually I don't know how much it cost, but it must have been big (million-dollar movies were being made in the late 20's--although back then spending a million dollars on a movie was like making "Terminator II"). But "Faust" was expensive in the sense that they had to hire droves of workers to physically build all of what's seen. If someone is lying on a hillside looking up at the sky, they built the exact hill they wanted. It was pretty cool to see on the big screen, actually!

I also wanted to mention that the lighting was as subtle as anything done nowadays.

Supposedly this is available on DVD...

Faust is one of my all time favourite films and it is also to me, the most visually pleasing film I have ever saw, it was kind of the film that I wish Nosferatu had been, I wish Murnau had more money when he was making Nosferatu.
The bit where Mephisto appears is especially pleasing, if anyone likes atmosphere in their horror, Faust is something you have to own. It is a great shame he only got to direct 3 horror films before he died shortly after Faust.
