i tried to watch the original dawn of the dead the other night and i was totally bored. i made it through maybe 45 minutes before i shut it off. i realize it's a classic and every true horror fan loves it so.... what's wrong with me? does it get better as it goes along? does it take repeated viewings to truely appreciate it? i love all horror movies, i really do, from the great to the absurd. but DOTD, which some consider the best of all time, i just couldn't get into. am i nuts? advice please.

jaded horror fan.

You may or may not be "nuts", I don't know you personally....have you ever tried to eat bugs....or kill a family member?

As far as the movie goes.....to be honest, I just watched this one myself a couple of weeks ago and it is a little dated. Still a great movie and if you never saw it, you should give it a chance. The problem is with the younger crowd, you have been CGIed to death with the current crop of "horror movies" so you may not appreciate the simpler good old fashioned effects.

Although the remake is also quite good and it doesn't look like they used too much CGI.

You should just stick to the classics like, Resident Evil 1 & 2, also check out House of the living dead thats what all zombie films should be like.

Exactly, you have to take in consideration when the movie was made. It's probably more appreciated by older horror fans, like myself.

I'm only gonna go on a rant like this once. Well, no, I already went on a rant like this before, so this is time #2. But bear with me:

I know there's a lot of people on this forum that haven't seen the older stuff. People who really have been CGI'd to death. People who don't remember that the "Star Wars" films didn't feature digital creatures, originally. But really, do yourself a favor, and watch some old films. Go back to the 20's and see "Nosferatu" and "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." (Heck, go back farther than that and see some of Georges Melies' films. See "The Great Train Robbery," too.) See the Universal horror classics of the 30's and 40's. And try to imagine how completely scared and freaked out the audiences of those times were. Because they were. And these films are all still legit.

These "old" films are all still effective--if you can place yourself in the mindframe OF THE AUDIENCES OF THE TIME. If you can do that, you will see that horror films have a tapestry of marvelous history. Today came out of yesterday. Yes, do yourself a favor and see some nice old films. It takes an effort to do the research, the homework. And it also costs money. But it's worth it. The craftsmanship of these older films is, I'm sorry to say, better than the majority of what is being made today.

Nowadays horror films tend to rely on 1. Loud noises on the cool digital soundtrack. 2. Startling MTV-style flash cutting--boring as hell. 3. Media hype that convinces you that the film is good before you even see it.

"Dawn of the Dead," back when it came out, freaked out audiences very seriously. It gave some people nightmares. Many, many people were shocked and startled, because they hadn't seen anything like it before. And it was good.

That's my rant! Wishing everyone a great holiday season!

Totally agree with what you're saying filmaker 2. But at that age i know i was the same. At 14 i saw original dotd, i also saw the shining. I remember thinking what a load of shit- wheres the gore? I saw the shining again 2-3 years later & loved the film & its now one of my favourite films, I was just ignorant at that age. What pisses me off more than dumb fuck mtv fed teenagers are these people who won't watch foreign films or even black & white films.
I got mates who won't watch subtitles, So i lend them Haute Tension which is dubbed, he says awesome film but the syncs out! I've given up trying to eduacte most of them i just leave them to their Tomb Raiders, Resident Evils, & AVP, while they label me the weirdo.

I'm convinced that saying old shit is garbage is just part of being young. We all went through it. I can remeber hating anything in B&W, without ever watching it. I hated the Rolling Stones because my parents liked them. That's just how it goes until you get to about 25 , then you take a much more cerebral view instead of trying to be different . You end up liking what you like, not what's cool at the time. And this generation is just trained to treat any movie that takes time to establish a story as boring. They'll get over it the more immersed in movies they become. Casual movie goers never will, but who gives a shit about them?

Anyway, DOTD is a classic. But the problem is it's not a straight up horror movie. Theres satirical moments all through it which many youngsters will never notice. And it is dated in terms of style, and you know kids...

urgeok
11-24-2004, 11:51 AM
thank god i was always open to old music/movies when i was young. I never had that view that if my parents like it it must suck.

Although i can say today - what my parents like sucked (they just had shit taste)

But old movies .. I love them.
70's arent old to me but they are to the population here .. and they were the best horror .. grittier ..

As far as comedies go .. you cant beat the fast talking razor sharp dialogue of the 30's - 40's

hell, people havent forgotten how to make good films,
people stopped wanting them.

I do think that anyone who grew up with "Famous Monsters of Filmland" was lucky, because at that time, it was considered COOL to like old monster movies (imagine that!). Around the time "Famous Monsters" faded out and was replaced by "Fangoria," it became "no longer cool" to be into that old stuff. Suddenly anything in black and white was undeserving of attention. The fake blood had to be red!

But yeah, it's hard to believe, looking back, that some kids would memorize the dialogue of the old Universal films...

"Famous Monsters" itself had a lot to do with shaping horror fan culture. It constantly reminded its readers that hey, we wouldn't have this new shit unless those wrinkled old guys had given us the old shit way back when. Today comes out of yesterday. I guess it was another way of saying "respect your elders," except with monsters.

That's good. However I was majoritively speaking. Of course not all kids hate all things 'old'. I liked Black Sabbath, but hated the Stones when I was your age. So I did like things that were on this earth well before I was born. But when I got into my mid-twenties, I definitely gave more things a chance, especially movies.

i think the younger folks have a hard time with subtle black and white slow building horror films.
Most of them want high octane guns blazing thrill a minute movies.

i prefer ones that have a nice slow build up .. allowing for character developement so that you actually get to know, like, and understand the characters which allows you to identify with them, thus feeling concern that they might actually die.
this is what builds terror and suspense ..

who gives a shit if some cardboard cutout character dies (i.e. anyone in resident evil 2)

making a great horror film is a rare art.
few take the bother to because it is too much of a risk.
The demogrphic for horror films is largely the youth population who are the ones that want everything hard and fast - so they dont get bored.
If they dont support good films (they rarely do) then they wont get made. Simple economics.

and i'm not saying all youth is like this ... just most of them.
