Always thought it was Nosferatu. But I read a while ago about something else being the the first horror movie ever made. So, what is it?

ste .. this would suggest you're right :

In a similarly political statement, Sarah mentions: "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer's 1919 silent film -- generally considered the first horror movie ever made -- is even scarier when you learn its inspiration lies in murder, Mayer's faked insanity, and the very real horrors of World War I.

my pick - The Golum was made in 1920 (so i was close :)

Hmmm thanks. I'll check them out. I tried really hard to enjoy Nosferatu but I failed.

Depends on what you call horror. Back when film was being introduced, the scariest piece of film was of a steam train hurtling towards the camera at full pace.

The punters in the theatre didn't understand what film really was then and thought the damn thing was heading towards them. Apparently half the audience had ran out of the building before the peice of film had even finished.

I think that must have been the most 'horrific' event in film history since no-one understood anythin about film then.

that was a funny time .... everything had to be extremely linear too. for example you couldnt show a guy getting up, and then suddenly outside on the street .. People didnt know what was going on unless the camera showed him going out the door, down the stairs, out the front door, and onto the street.
