The Dark Elf Trilogy by RA Salvatore.

salvatore is the man quite the way with words. I really think he does the best job with his battle scenes. Also Weis and Hickman and the Dragonlance chronicles. They are awesome books

i like the oldschool Conan books by Howard ..
and in that vein, the John Carter Warlord of Mars,
by Burroughs .. but thats really more sci-fi.

I hear that George R.R. Martin is pretty much the new Tolkien.
