actually - i dont have a problem with this one ...
I think its worth a shot.
At least it's carpenter ... he might have one more good movie in him ..
or he could merely need to flush his bowels ..
I never thought his ex wife Barbeau was any good in the 1st one ... I'll miss Hal Holbrook though.

The Fog is one of my favorite Carpenter films......as zwoti says definitely for the money, or maybe complete creative burnout.

I'm afraid to pass judgement until i see it ..
He remade Assault on Precinct 13 as Ghosts of Mars which was pathetic ... he had no budget.
Maybe there is enough interest in this one to provide him with a bigger budget and maybe .. just maybe .. he'll get a great cast.
(hopefully not a bunch of kids)
and the fog is also one of my favorites.
Carpenter is the only director who's works (or related - the halloween series) I've been able to get complete on laserdiscs - until they stopped making them.
I paid $80 US for the laserdisc of The Fog on Ebay..
and then the bloody thing came out on DVD a year or so later.

John Carpenter said he already made his version of fog and now it is someone elses turn to make the fog (same with the blob and the thing)

ooops sorry - misread .. he's just producing.
its a crapshoot ... at least the old one doesnt become undone when the new one is made ..
the one that has me pissed more than anything is a remake of Alfie with Jude Law ..
I know its not horror but for some reason that film was so perfect that remaking it is a slap in the face to the origional ...
I should probably feel that wat about the fog, etc but i dont ..
Horror film makers who love horror films do these remakes because they are honoring the origional..
But unfortunately a lot of hacks get these jobs so they can get no-risk experience and move onto other things ..
Those are the remakes that fail .. lack of passion.

Most saw it as a major dissapointment after Halloween.
its one of those movies that people discovered after the fact.

I saw the original the weekend it first opened and I thought it was a blast..A few plot holes here and there but it was still great. This new one, well...Let's just wait and see..you never know.. it might be okay, I'm not going to judge it until I see some footage from it Then I'll decide.

If you ask me (which you didn't) there is only one fog and that's the James Herbert novel, I might be wrong as I haven't read it for years but I don't remember many Pirates in it...
...I do remember that he pretty much re-wrote it as The Dark which was one of his better books so a remake of The Fog might not be that bad...but it's not been a good time for remakes recently (whoever said about "no risk" projects for first timers nail on head etc. Zack Snyder)
I don't think this is such a bad idea. The Fog was a great little movie for its day but most def could use a little update.
People bitched about the thought of remaking the Dawn of the Dead and I thought it turned out most excellent.
most excellent?........maybe they should remake Bill & Ted's.

herberts 'the fog' and Carpenters The Fog have nothing in common .. completely independant.

what you on about?
JHs The Fog and JCs The Fog are seperate from each other....nothing to do with each other.
One's a book based on a writers own ideas and one's a film based on a directors own ideas.

JC commented that he gained inspiration for The Fog, from a British film made in the late 1950s called The Cralling Eye, which had monsters in clouds.

and countless similar ghost tales no doubt.
there's more than one coastal town that has stories about pirates that lured ships onto rocks with false lighthouse lights so that they could plunder the goods on board... and from those stories come tales of ghosts getting their revenge.
as far as the remake goes ... the movie had a great cast ..
I hope its not done with a bunch of unknown kids this time ..
I'm gonna go as far as recasting this movie. Let me know what you think.
For Hal Holbrook's tortured priest I'm going with David Carradine. The Adrienne Barbeau part has to go to a strong willed woman,so I choose Sigourney Weaver. I always felt Tom Atkins was to old to play Jamie Lee's love interest so I'm going with Matt Damon.Sarah Polly did such a bang up job in the new DOTD remake, she gets Jamie's part.
Ladies and gents....I give you my cast...

nice enough lineup but it dont do it for me... to many big names there. Sigourney is...... well just dont fit the part....she's got that alien stigma about her. I wouldnt want to see Matt Damon in it either.

A small update from the Creature Corner-
Regarding that remake of The Fog: While we haven't heard about much movement on the project other than the fact that Hill and Carpenter are still looking for someone to fund the script, we have heard more plot details. Apparently the premise doesn't involve a ship of ghost lepers who use the shroud of a fog bank to wreak their revenge, this remake sounds more like an update and involves a band of slaughtered…get this…gang members (!) who stalk their victims in the fog.

I too love the original of the Fog, but I wouldn't mind seeing a remake. But "gang members" instead of pirate lepers???? That is almost one of the most sickening things I have ever heard. I bet Ludakriss (however he spells it) is gonna do the soundtrack! ha!

yes it was , but it was a story about the fog making people mad, not rotting men in fog, and the setting was in England.
