man its refreshing seeing people say DOTD .. i'm tired of the rabid fanboys cutting it up.
I'm pretty damn hard to please with movies in general - but i thought it was a fine film .. The thing is also a great choice.
I actually liked the night of the living dead remake as well ...
They arent trying to reinvent or discredit the origionals .. they are just good films keeping the genre fresh.

You do know she called it crappy, right?
And out of that era...hit or miss. Think about "The Haunting". There you go.

i agree. but i like dawn of the better. but i only because ilike that genere(sp) better. i think all these directors and producers who have their heart set on making remakes, should sit down and study those two movies to see how a good remake is made.

you cant expect them to do that .......that would be far to difficult for them :p

so true. they would rather rely on some failed film maker at a film school advice on how to make a movie. instead of looking at movie made by a horror movie making genius like carpenter. for some form of idea on how to make a decent movie.

i dont know how much say the director in a low budget film has these days (unless he/she financed it)
I believe that the producers steer the picture in a direction that will make them their money back.
If they see a guy going out on a limb and use too much origionality it makes them nervous. They prefer to appeal to the lowest common denominator... the sheep ... who would perfer to see things that are easy to understand .. car chases, things blowing up...PG rated violence.
Its all about the box office baby.
Halloween wasnt made with Carpenter thinking it would be the most successful independant film of all time .. it was great filmmaking and great timing.
Thats kind of why i roll my eyes when these early films get over analyzed ... like the 'what is Michael thinking' thread.
Caprenter didnt care .. he just wanted to scare people..
Anyway i got away from my point there ...
Which was ... these guys can study films all they like but its studying the box office impact that matters to the guys that hold the strings.
if you want a really apt analogy ... look at Brittney Spears and look at your own favorite band/singer ... I'll bet Brittney has more money than God compared to whoever you picked.
does it make sense ? no - blame the lowest common denominator.

TCM re-make wasn't that bad. No dinner scene though.

"The Thing" I thought of as more "going back to the source" of the short story....but I loved that remake, or whatever you want to call it....
I liked the recent TCM remake, I thought it was scary as all get-out...
And "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" (1979) was an excellent, and very scary, remake.
I didn't like the new "House on Haunted Hill" or "13 Ghosts" (I thought the originals were FAR better).
I did, however, see the "13 Ghosts" remake in the theatres, and I enjoyed watching it, in a stupid, silly sort of way. I did like the sound editing, and I liked the scene with the jerk lawyer getting sliced completely in half, because it was just so audacious.

The house haunted was a good remake. The New dawn of the dead was extermly good. The worst remake I have ever seen was the The Haunating, I like old better.

I know .. i saw the show where he brought some of his home made art .. one was a do-bee from romper room.
no doubt about it he is in outer space but that edge sure makes him great for films where he plays a creep..

Well i did a search and couldn't find anything current on the original The Haunting. I just saw the remake and i actually liked the original one better. It scared me more. I found the remake some what cheese.
I mean the end she is just talking to this big powerful ghost dude and says "oh it's just you and me" blah blah blah, and what now all these souls get power? Uh whatever.

I think we have to differentiate between 'remake' .. and 'new version'.
Remake suggests that there is going to be an improvement on the origional.
Maybe thats why most people hate them
I think of them as new versions. Inspired by the origional but by no means an attempt to be a new improved version of the origional.
what this particular director would have done given the framework.
if you look at it this way ... then it makes it easier to like them.
Dawn of the Dead, and Savini's Night of the Living Dead movies get my vote in that light ..

Yeah, good point! ^^
IMO I can only think of one movie that I would say was 'remade' and that was "Psycho". It was redone, pretty much line for line and shot for shot.
I would say that was a remake of the original, as mentioned above, all others I would call 'new versions'.
