Hey Gang,
Remember when John Carpenter made good, even great, movies. The kind of film that when you were leaving the theatre, you thought WHAT A MOVIE!!. You think those days are ever coming back? Because, let's face it "Ghosts Of Mars" really did stink up the room. Well until we see something new from Mr.C let's pick our top 5 favorite Carpenter movie's here's mine, curious to see yours.

1. Escape From New York (I know it's not horror.but it's my favorite JC movie)

2.The Thing-I saw this a couple of weeks before it premired, and was compleatly blow away, great movie.

3.Vampires-Good gory sexy fun. loved it

4.Halloween- The first and still the best

5.The Fog-I know it has plot holes you can drive a truck through, but I still like it.

yeah i wondered about that too ...
I think someone saw the word Classic and figured John Carpenter belonged due to Halloween.

Or not ...

and yeah .. i thought The Mouth of Madness was pretty bad.
To make matters worse, this mystical town is Unionville, close to where i live. The asylum is the Toronto Water Treatment Plant and the 'Temple' where the writer lives is up the 400.

When you know the locations of a fantasy film extremely well, (especially one with a 'mystical town' its hard to suspend the imagination.

Actually, I liked Ghosts of Mars quite a bit. There are a few people who liked it. I saw it in the theatres with a friend, and we had a good old rollicking time!

i only liked mouth of madness because it was a bad rendition of lovecraft... oh wait, it did not follow the real story, unionville was not arkham, and it kind of sucked. *LMAO* i wouldn't be able to take it seriously if i saw the water treatment plant, that's great. when i'm in toronto next I'm visiting the plant!!! HAHA!!! that is too funny. thanks for telling me!

1.vampires(i am a sucker for vampire flicks and this one was pretty decent)
2.the thing(can't deny it is good!)
3.halloween(hey can i borrow i knife? well, i didn't know it was william shatner season. haha)
4.the fog(aaaahhhhh... that was the one withthe pirates)
5.at the mouth of madness (only because lovecrafts name is in the credits)

one thing about Mouth .... Carpenter brought the lighting guy on board to do the commentary which is very cool.

Thats the one thing about Carpenter .. if the film is good or bad you still get more out of the commentaries. They should be a must for any film student. He's entertaining and informative .. her really understands how to do a commentary better than anyone else ... Kevin Smith is a close second.

Re Vampires ... i actually hated this film mostly because of James Woods performance which is odd for me because normally i like the guy.
I just found his tough guy act too formulatic ... as if Carpenter saw something similar in another movie and thought it would work in his ... He was no Snake Pliskin.
And the dick jokes fell flat..
Didnt care for Baldwin either .. i'm always amazed that guy finds work .. he just looks wrong in any roll and he's wooden.

I read the book too buy the way .. and it had more of a mercenary feel than a religeous crusader feel to it.
In fact it was called Vampire$ (with the dollar sign)

1) Assault on Precinct 13.
2) Halloween
3) The Fog
4) Prince of Darkness
5) They Live

Pity JC is M.I.A. these days. We need a 70s style revival of cheap, independent, intelligent horror so the likes of JC can rise again. Ahem...I know that sounds a bit messianic...'initially' speaking.

In my (humble) opinion, John Carpenters best film to date is his remake of "The Thing" bar none. The Special Effects were ahead of the time. It has that magical combination of Sci-Fi, horror, thriller, action, drama and comedy that is hard to mix and mix well. Although not my favorite Horror film, it is in my top five list of all time great horror movies!

#2). Holloween
#3). Vampires
#4). Escape from New York
#5). In the Mouth of Madness

The Fog (though I was slightly annoyed it didn't follow Herbert's book more closely)

Halloween

The Thing - and I'll have to watch that one again sometime, it's years since I saw it.

Not sure if the link will work but it gives an amusing synopsis.

completely different from the Herbert book .. no relation at all.

Herberts The fog .. was it not a green fog with a nucleus .. it drove people crazy ...

there was an american movie called Impulse a while back .. that was closer to Herberts Fog .. although in this case it wasnt a fog, it was contaminated water getting into the milk supply. made the people in the town act in extremes ... sexual, violent ... (impulsive)

Carpenters movie was a good old shost story.

I wasn't really into Prince Of Darkness which is weird because I like pretty much everything he has put out including Ghosts Of Mars. My favorites would be They Live, Assault On Precinct 13, Escape From New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble In Little China.
And what the fuck is up with Assault on Precinct 13 being remade?? That thing is going to totally fucking suck cock.....
