I would classify it more as sci-fi since it features aliens and not ghosts or monsters.
I still consider one of Carpenter's 5 best movies.
heres the plot synopsis from IMDB:
John Nada is a man without job who walks around a big American city trying to find something to do. He finally finds a job as a worker and a place to spend the nights, but one day something terrible happens to him. John discovers a pair of sun-glasses through which he can see the true face of people. Many persons in this city are in fact aliens (from the Andromeda) and most of them are important members of our society. They keep humans in ignorance and they rule our world as they like. Nada must find the rest of the men that know what's happening (those who made the strange sun-glasses) and join them in the fight against the aliens...

It's a sci fi/alien-takeover type of movie. It reminded me a little of the Stephen King story The Ten O'Clock People. The fight scene between Keith David and Piper has got to be one of the longest in movie history.

It is a social commentary.

Yeah, this movie totally rules. There's this thin social commentary about how the rich (republicans) who have all the power do all they can to keep the poor and minorities down with the help of the police and the fascist aliens. It actually works better than most serious political films.
And, oh God, the fight scene....its like you kinda think it might not ever end.
Anyone's who watches South Park knows this is where they got the idea for the (in)famous "cripple fight" between Jimmy and Timmy. Absolutely hysterical!

As I said to stingy ...
Yes you dam well should THEY LIVE is cool as hell ...
It’s a great B style movie, in fact not just great, but the best!
It’s a John Carpenter movie
It’s got Roddy Piper
It’s got the longest fist fight on film
It’s got music by John Carpenter
It’s got George “Buck” Flower in his best role
Aliens you can only see when your wearing shades (I mean that right there, makes it fantastic B movie stuff)
Great opening speech from the blind preacher!
It has the line “I have come to chew bubblegum and kick ass … and I’m all out of bubble gum”
… THIS MOVIE RULES …

the fight scene....
The look on Keith David's face when his car is damaged and they both stop fighting for a second is hilarious.

According to Matt and Trey, the cripple fight is the They Live fight, frame for frame.

And do you honestly think they would change the acting and nothing else? No, they would shit on this movie the way they do with most of the other ones. Or, it will be a completely different movie. The campiness is why its a classic. or, part of why.

Look at the Dawn of the Dead remake, I mean... both movies are different and good. I just couldn't get into the movie with the main actor and I think the movies social views would appeal more to today.

i dont get the Piper bashing ..
I wanted to say look what a good director can do with a bad actor even before i saw the other posts... Piper was great in the film, i cant imagine it being done any differently.
You want to see what a bad director does with Roddy .. see Hell Comes to Frogtown.
There is no point in remaking this film ...
although Carpenter isnt exactly a stranger to remaking his own films ..
Ghosts of MArs was just a sloppy remake of Assault on Precinct 13 and look what crap that turned out to be.
Let They Live alone .. its a great film.
