View Full Version : new horror......when??

ok, i love horror films, just like the rest of the members, but don't you think it's about time someone came up with something new, all we seem to be getting is remakes, sequels and english versions of japanese horror, don't get me wrong, i long for sequels of halloween, chucky and friday the 13th films (friday the 13th being my fave and im writing a sequel for it myself at the moment).
but isn't it about time we was given a new horror, for example, get Carpenter, Craven, Argento, Romero, raimi (to name a few great directors) in a room and together come up with a all new, shit ya pants, scary film.
i personally haven't been scared shitless since i was 11 and i first watched friday the 13th (which spawned my obsession with the franchise), i cannot name a film of recent years that has made me not been able to sleep, or made me jump or made me discolour my shorts.
why is it that filmmakers can't realise that there are millions of people out there just wanting that one big scary movie that they will never forget, a movie that doesn't need a sequel, a movie that has all the outrage that happened when the exorcist was first released at cinemas.
does anyone agree with me, that a film would be worth watching when the opening titles come up and start with....
A Raimi/Carpenter/Craven/Argento/Romero/Cunningham/Yu/Hooper/Savini Film
now who agrees that this would be a kick ass scary film??

Huh???
Nice idea, but not necessarily bound to produce a kick-ass horror film.
In fact, given the downword creative spiral of most of those directors in recent years, the results would probably be dire.
The film you are looking for has been and gone in The Blair Witch Project - this (relatively) new experience is not grasped by all, but is the only Western horror movie in the last 20 years to make many jaded fans really sit up and listen.
I think a lot of the impact made by most horror movies is lost as you get older - when you're young enought to think there actually COULD be a horrible floating vampire in that fog outside your window, that's when you enjoy 'em the most.
When you're past your teens, you're more cynical and tend to just pontificate a load of shit about horror and become more obsessed with the thrills & spills instead of the creepy suggestion that used to get under your skin.

I try and get my fix as best I can by watching lesser known horror films, such as Ginger Snaps or Bubba Ho-Tep. They don't necessarily break too much new ground but the stories are entertaining and original.
As far as beign scared shitless, same with me, really hasn't happened since I was a kid. The trend of japanese horror films getting english versions is good though, it will prompt filmakers to wake up one of these days and get some great movies made stateside.

i see sam has been reading the dictionary again, looking for all those big grown up words he can use to put a NooB down, keep working at it buddy, you will get there in the end and gorephobia has the same vocabulary, remember guys, one day you will be real boys.
i know the concept of all those directors getting together and making a movie will never happen, it was just a "what if" statement.
as far as the comment "fan fiction, make your own story" by mr Hutchison, i do plan to, but this is my first book i'm trying to write and i am just trying to write something small to start with, i do have some fresh ideas, but i just wanna see how this book goes before i decide on how to create a new story, plus, fan fiction is how sequels are written.

oh, and i would like to thank EXTR3MIST and Fred Krueger for their comments, so far they seem to be the only ones to have actually read what i had posted and took time to answer it properly, and no i'm not being a NooB who can't take put downs by others, but when it does come to put downs think of something new instead of "fuck you" or "double fuck you", cuz they do tend to get a little boring when they seem to appear in every other thread posted by people, to be honest, it's the kind of put down i would expect a NooB to say.
plus i appreciate what Mr Hutchinson had to say, and understand where he was coming from.

you act as though you deserve more of a response. If you were worth more time then I might have posted more than "fuck you", but nothing more needed to be said.

I like when Brian did the "describe movies to blind people" community service thing on Family Guy, and they saw Blair Witch Project.

Last movie that scared me was Ringu. But it needed more scares. It is too slow paced for me.

i didnt watch ringu but i watched ring. i thought i heard ring is suppode to be exactly like ringu (like the psycho remake). buit i could be wrong
anyway i thought it was great. for me, most horrors are too FAST. like theyre trying to speed things up, put in all the goodies at once etc etc. the ring did a good job of building things up methinks.
now in the case of TCM (orig) that was wayyyyyyyyy to lsow for me. i almost fell asleep it was so slolw. but it IS an older movie so i kinda understand...
<~~ soo excited to watch SAW :D :D :D

Ring and Ringu are pretty different. Ringu has a tighter narritive structure and story. The Ring has more happening in its plot, but it's not as good.
Also, The Ring's visuals are better, but Ringu's slightly less impressive visuals kinda work to its advantage

Crap. They are both good but the remake is very the same just a bit more glossy.

The obvious reason why Ringu scared me and The Ring didn't is I've seen Ringu before really. They're pretty much the same. I don't mind slow paces, but, for a movie to give me nightmares, it needs to contain a lot of scares.

Perhaps if it had more zombies, gore, incidental music and nice birds in it, BWP would have been a winner?
It is clearly not a favourite of many expectant horror fans, but it is unfathomable how this brutally simple and effective film leaves many non-the-wiser as to what they have just experienced.
Without drawing too many distinctions between how people actually watch films, perhaps it is simply a case of one man's thrillride is another man's snoozefest.

Ringu didn't do anything for me....the volcano bit seemed a bit more forced...althought the samara backstory was a bit more fleshed out in Ringu....
It scared me less, impressed me less, no subliminal quick shots like in the Ring, i love that shit, and the ending TV scene did nothing for me in Ringu....to each his own....
