I gotta friend who confuses cause with coincidence a bit too often. He's convinced that this crappy movie was somehow based on the Japanese cartoon of the same name. Well, similar name at least. Anyhows... can anyone help me on this so's I can shut his trap up?

Umm...I know that the character Van Helsing is based on "Dracula" but I'm trying to figure out if anyone knows if there's a DIRECT connection between the Japanese cartoon and that $200 million crap-fest that was released this summer?

Nah, not Vampire Hunter D, I know what that one is. Its this anime movie titled Van Hellsing....with two "L's"
Anyways, this guy is always making these sorts of connections. He has too much time on his hands and obviously I do too.

Actually, it was based on the old Universal monster movies.

Ugh! This movie was sooooo bad! There were too many special effects and those weapons he used were just too futuristic. What happened to the classic art of horror movies.
Anyway back to the question. Yes, it's based on a character from Universal horror movies.

idiots! van helsing was one of the main characters fron the novel dracula. he isn't a old universal character. honestly do yourselves a favour and read a book for once in ya lives.
lol@ van helsing was a guiy who got rid of demons.
van helsing was the old dude in dracula. who clued johnathan(sp). and all the others about dracula and how to kill him. if you people are to stupid to read a book go watch the movie with keanu reeves and hopkins. thats pretty close to the original dracula story.

I just watched this again lastnight. I love it. It's cool how big the vampires mouths are. I liked having werewolves, frank and mr. hide in it too!!

*sigh* the Anime was created and released to co-promote the release of the movie....its being done more and more to build hype about the movie as it releases theaters....
A very lackluster anime, for a fucking WEAK excuse for a movie....truly fitting....
And Van Helsing is from Bram Stoker's Novel, he appears in most Dracula films in one fashion or another....these movies we're just based on him alone.....in a completely bastardized storyline...yippie...

I have read Dracula, and yes Van Helsing is a character from the book. I don't remember Frankenstein or the Wolfman being there though.
While the film is an homage to the 1930s and '40s Universal Monster horror films, the inclusion of Mr. Hyde is an oddity, as he was never one of the Universal Monster roster. Instead, the films based on Hyde during that time were made for Universal's rival MGM. Van Helsing (http://www.brian-oshaughnessy.com/van-helsing.html)

I thought arioch would've picked up on this one, but obviously he's not in top form today, so I'll hop back in momentarily to take it.
THIS

Makes it sound as though he's talking about "Hellsing", but there's no "VAN".
The anime that has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the movie,
or that p.o.s promotional tool of a cartoon, but as far as I know, Hellsing IS something to do with vampires/demons...

I watched Van Helsing fully expecting to hate it, but you know what. I enjoyed the shit out of it. It's like a 10 year old kids fantasy monster movie. When you take it like that, the way it was meant to be taken, you really see what Sommers was going for and scored if you ask me. I had a blast with it.

10-23-2004, 05:54 AM
i agree. i don't think they meant for it to be nothing more than a fantasy/action flick. i think they did a good job
EvilEd
10-23-2004, 05:59 AM
and say what you will of the FX, but Sommers knows how to build a world. The entire look of the film is just the most visually rich chocolate cake of a film! Every shot is just amazing.

YES!!! Thank you Cheeba.
"Hellsing" is the thing I'm talking about. NOT that stupid little direct-to-video 23 minute cartoon tie-in.
See, I don't know anything about "Hellsing," having never watched it. What I was hoping was someone out there would have seen it, understood the question I was asking and tell me that I was right in telling my idiot buddy to take a hike with his wild theories.
OBVIOUSLY "Van Helsing" was taken from Universal's classic horror line in the hopes of recharging old franchises. OBVIOUSLY Professor Van Helsing is from "Dracula," which I've read.
I was asking a very specific question.
Has anyone actually seen "Hellsing?" That's my real problem here, I haven't and really don't plan on it either.
Dolarhyde
10-24-2004, 06:26 AM
Sorry, I guess I misunderstood what you were asking. I haven't seen Hellsing yet, but plan to in the next week or so.
I also think it's safe to say there is no connection between Van Helsing and Hellsing.
Synopsis from Netflix....
A secret war is brewing in the twilight … a war in which humanity is only a pawn. The mysterious Hellsing Organization keeps to the shadows as they try to protect ordinary mortals from the legions of the undead that would prey upon them. But as ghouls and vampires multiply, Hellsing is forced to deploy its own secret weapon -- the rogue vampire Arucard!

ok van helsing is based off the japanese cartoon van helking. it is the same charactors and everything. they were going to release it to america but failed in the process of changing the language. so after that the whole thing colapsed and then they just started to play reruns all the time. so your friend is right. and you all are right too, cuz van helsing was the shittiest movies i have ever seen.

whoa.....what?.....shit...really???
Goddamn....o.k., but now this looks like we're talking about 2 different anime movies.
"Van Helking" and "Hellsing"
Well, now I'm thoroughly confused. O.K., well thanks for the help there. Probably wasn't such a big deal to begin with.
Oh, and yeah...."Van Helsing"--the big budget American movie was probably about the worst thing I've seen all year.

Ahh yes... the sad thing is ive actually seen the series the ENTIRE way through.....Its all about Dracula ("alucard" in the anime, dracula backwards, yes, very gay:rolleyes: ), and the Hellsing FAMILY that owns him somehow....
Its alright, not really one of my favorites at all as its really upbeat with jazzy music and offbeat humor....doesn't feel like dracula to me, but my friends liked it alot more than i did....you might check it out if you feel so inclined....
And has no relation to the promotional anime i was refurring to....

Steven Sommers is one of the worst filmmakers out there today.
I never cared for either mummy film and Van Helsing is the poorest effort yet ...
There are 100 things wrong with it but for me it boils down to 2 things.
1) the Sommers manditory annoying comedy relief guy.
(WHO SUCKS worse than any vampire)
2) an the idiot with the cartoon count vampire accent.
dear god in heaven that guy was unbelievable.
He actually had the line (while fighting the vanhelsingwerewolf)
"We could have been friends" Maybe everything would be ok if
he bought the werewolf a coca-cola ?
Man that was dumb. And just the tip of this stinking iceberg.

Check him out in Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead ...

I guess thats why that whiney little comic relief shit showed up again in the mummy.
His girlfriend should have survived, not him !
