I dont think it was a religion per say but an experiment in the boundries of pleasure and pain. It has been said that there are those whose pain goes so far that it is a pleasure and vice versa. I have seen people actually hanging from hooks inserted into their skin and they considered it a kind of religious expirience.

LOL at all the answers before! Love the Pilaties one!
As for the real answer, I'm not sure if it was ever said. Will have to go back and reread "The Hellbound Heart" and see if it's mentioned in there. Has been forever since I've seen any of the Hellraiser series, might be a good idea for rentals this weekend.

That "dianetics" joke was classic! Actually laughed, out loud even! Heavens to mergatroid....
Anyways...I always thought the whole hooks/pain thing was a metaphor for sex. You react in the same way, sometimes the line can get blurred when its really good.

I didn't know Hellraiser was based on a book. What's the author's name?

Yes. I'm not a hardcore movie fan like most of you.

Okay, so it's Clive Barker. I knew he directed the movie, but I didn't know he wrote the story it was based on too. I'll try to find a copy somewhere.
