Talking about alice got me thinking.... I miss Quake. That is the game to end all games for me. It got me started. i had played Doom all the way through, but Quake left a lasting impression on me.

Quake was very much a living, breathing world to me. For some reason, the design of the world along with the creatures living in it just seemed to have a logic to them that was natural.

It also was the first game to have a soundtrack that i would listen to outside of the game (and i still do).

It was also the first game to really scare the shit out of me. There are few things worse in a game than having a Fiend tearing ass after you down a dark hallway with strobe-lights....

And while Quake 2 wasnt quite as scary or ground-breaking, it was still an awesome game. It introduced the Railgun. It had 3d explosions (they were kinda cheesey, but they fit the feel of the game).

I was always kind of thankful that they came up with a new story for the second one: Alien Cyborgs as opposed to Demons from Hell. Hopwever, i would love it if quake 4 (in production by Raven, the same guys that made Soldier Of Fortune, I think) was a blend of the two... Could you imagine an ogre with a chainsaw built into his arm, or a cyber-fiend? holy shit, that would be cool....:)

Yes, I agree...quake 1 & 2 are among my favourite FPS games.

The first one was just SO different from anything that was out there at the time, I don't think I'd ever felt like I was "inside" a game up until that point, and as I recall, I'd never seen quite so many bloody chunks at the time, which was great.
The soundtrack was pretty shit-hot too, and suited the atmosphere of the game incredibly. The perpetually reanimating zombies, the "whoah!" fiends, and of course, the shambler!- All I could say was "what the fuck?!?" after being ripped to peices.
Still has balls aplenty today. Love it.

As for the second one, I was at first a little perturbed at how far a cry it seemed from the first one. At first, I actually didn't like it because of this...but when I eventually got into it, this game contained some of the most fucked up firefights I'd encoutered to that point...suddenly the other side didn't seem like suck a joke.
Not quite as fond of it as I was part 1, but thats not to say I don't give it at least yearly replay...I noticed there's no shortage of official AND unofficial add-ons and extra missions out there, I never DID check those out...any reccomendations?

Hmmm...what to say about the 3rd one...A single player mission would've been nice, as far as a deathmatch botmatch thing goes, I gotta say - Unreal Tournament did it better.
Considering how good the first 2 single player missions were, I was just very dissapointed that I played q3 just to find out there wasn't one in sight.

Here's hoping Q4 has enough balls to have BOTH modes...
