Can not recall title of movie

I saw this film when I was young and it keeps coming to mind, but I don't know what it was. What I can recall is foggy in my mind. Does anyone know? It was most likely made in the late 70's to early 80's. It takes place in some kind of private school/highschool or collage. Somewhere at the school the main charector who is your sort of looser picked on fella finds a book or meets an evil entity of sorts perhaps in a secret cellar. While still picked on he gets powers etc... In the end it has a sort of "Carrie" type ending where everyone is trapped by his will in a chapel and he goes to town with a sword or something not unlike. Any clue???

I think there may have been school uniforms? The main guy had dark hair I believe. Might even have been early 70's. I tried to figure this one out several times.
