Guillermo Del Toro is going for MAMA!

Universal is developing a feature film based on the Spanish-language short Mama, from newcomers Andy and Barbara Muschietti. Guillermo del Toro is apparently in negotiations to produce the film and mentor the filmmakers, much like he did with Juan Antonio Bayona for The Orphanage.

The Muschietti duo are currently working on the English-language script, with the possibility of filming to take place in New Zealand while del Toro shoots The Hobbit next year. The premise is being kept under wraps, but the short reportedly centers on two girls, Victoria and Lily, who are on the run from a ghostly woman who appears to be their mother.

The "effects-heavy picture" will likely contain an "emotional as well as a horror element, since the girls are pursued by someone, who at one time was their guardian and caretaker."

And here is the short film MAMA:

Looks incredibly awsome.

Toro seems to be perfect for the job.

That short is seriously fun and considering how Devils Backbone turned out I'm glad Del Toro is doing another ghost story.

It feels like Jessica Chastain is a name that we’ve been hearing about for years now, without much evidence to go by in terms of released movies. But now that we’ve seen her in a leading role in Terrence Malick‘s “The Tree of Life,” we understand why she’s such a hot property: she’s a terrific, luminous actress.

Twitch reports that Chastain has signed on to “Mama,” a feature-length remake of a 2008 short film by Spanish filmmaker Andres Muschietti that Universal International are putting together.

The short, which involves two young girls pursued by a woman who wants to use them to bring back her own dead children, got great acclaim at festivals in the last few years, and a remake has apparently been in the works for a while: it will come as no great surprise, considering his track record in the genre, that Guillermo Del Toro is producing the project, one of the seemingly thousands of films he’s lending his name to.

The last time Del Toro lent his name to a first-time Spanish genre director, we got Juan Antonio Bayona‘s “The Orphanage,” as close to an instant classic in the horror genre as anything in the last few years, so we hope the success is repeated. Having Chastain on board certainly helps us take this one seriously.

Filming will start in October, so a release in 2012 seems likely.

I see the youtube clip in the first post doesn't work anymore, so here's another one for the newly arrived.

I just watched the short a month or so ago. It gave me chills. I think it was the age of the characters, the music, and the movement of the creature. It might help that the whole thing is done in one shot. Or at least edited to look like one shot.
