Story Time

A few people here are probably into writing. Myself, Neverending and Doc Faustus all have published work and there might even be more members here who do or maybe just have things they have written that they would like to share.

I'm not sure if a thread like this has been done before but even if it has i thought i would start a new one. If anyone has any work they would like to share with the rest of the forum, here's a place you can post it and hear what everyone has to say.

I'll go first. The following is the first chapter for my current WIP "Big Nasty." This is the first draft so there are probably many mistakes as well as things i might take out and there are other things i might add later on.

But regardless i thought i would share. Enjoy.

When the three boys went into Godric’s Woods, they had no idea they would be eaten.

Godric’s Wood’s sat in the center of the town of Orange Grove. In fact it pretty much dominated it. There were a lot of stories about the haunted woods. Some were made up, some were exaggerated but still others were true. One thing that wasn’t made up was the beast that would be devouring the children’s bones and drinking their blood.

The creature didn’t care that the boys had names which were Sean, Harry and Jeremy.

It didn’t care that Sean loved playing baseball and dreamed about playing in the major leagues one day even though he knew it would never happen and he would end up working in his father’s contracting business.

It didn’t care that Harry never had a girlfriend or even shared a kiss from a girl and wanted to experience this more than anything in the world.

It also didn’t give a single thought that Jeremy wanted to write a book one day, about what he wasn’t sure but he loved writing and had scribbled a few stories already maybe even some that could be turned into a novel one day.
The monster didn’t know about any of these things and wouldn’t have cared either way. All it knew was that it was hungry and food had walked right into its home and woken it up.

The kids just wanted to have a little bit of dangerous fun. All three of them believed in the stories even though Sean acted like he didn’t but that’s why they went in. It was the risk of doing something they weren’t supposed to that made it exciting. That decision would put them in the stomach of an ancient beast people thought only existed in fairy tales and legends.

“We shouldn’t be doing this.” Harry said for the millionth time.
“Shut up already, would you Harry?” Sean said. He was sick of his friend’s endless complaints. This was supposed to be fun but Harry was ruining it by acting like a big scared girl.
“There’s a reason nobody comes here Sean.” Harry said.
“Lots of people come here.”
“Yeah and look what happened to them.”

Sean stopped walking up the hill and looked back at his friend. Harry was short, chubby and pretty damn ugly. His hair was a wretched brown color that was too long at some parts and too short at others. He always looked like he had just gotten a haircut by a blind barber but that was just how his hair grew. His face was oddly shaped and rough. It gave him an appearance of a goblin or gargoyle. Worst of all, he was constantly poking his fat tongue out of his mouth in a quick lizard like motion.

Sean hated that. Sometimes he wondered why he was even friends with such a loser like Harry. If he was forced to look for an answer though he would probably realize, that despite his cocky attitude, he wasn’t happy with himself and hung around with Harry to raise his self-esteem.

Sean himself was tall, lean with rich wavy blond hair. His complexion was clear and his face was shaped so well, people would have a hard time thinking he hadn’t gotten plastic surgery if it wasn’t for his age. His eyes were a bright blue with tiny speckles of green in them that made his eyes shoot out like bright lights.

“Harry, nobody knows what happened to them.” Sean said shaking his head and then turned back towards the trail and continued leading the three of them.
“Yeah but they’re still missing.”
“What are you guys talking about?” Jeremy suddenly said. Sean and Harry both looked at him quizzically even though they were used to the fact that despite being right next to the both of them, he hadn’t heard a single word they said. Jeremy had a bad habit of zoning in and out while his imagination ran wild. He could be perfectly focused one minute and then see something that would make him think of a story that he could write and off he would go with the possibilities‘.

Sean smirked and chuckled. Unlike Harry, Sean knew why he was friends with Jeremy. He actually liked him and despite his habit of losing touch with the world around him, he had fun with him. The two of them had been friends for a long time. Plus being seen with Jeremy, who was almost as tall as Sean with long thick black hair and pale skin that actually looked very good on him, wasn’t embarrassing like being seen with Harry the Troll.

“We’re talking about the missing people.” Harry said even though they weren’t really. Jeremy chuckled almost exactly like Sean had done.
“Which ones?” He said and immediately looked to Sean for approval who smiled and laughed back. Harry shook his head. Just like Sean wondered why he hung out with Harry, he wondered the same towards the two of them. Sean was a jerk and Jeremy was a spaced out suck up. But unlike Sean, whose reasons for his friendship with Harry were buried deep under denial and repressed feelings, Harry knew exactly why he was friends with them.

Who else would he be friends with?

Nobody liked Harry. It wasn’t just his appearance either. He didn’t bathe much and had really bad manners. He was always farting around people and then laughing loudly about it as if he was proud and he looked like a pig eating out a trough no matter what he happened to be eating at the time. He had really bad social skills and could barely get out two words that were intelligible. Whenever he did happen to say something, it was always the wrong thing. Besides the lizard tongue, another bad habit of Harry’s was putting his foot in his mouth. That was why he had never had a girlfriend or even kissed a girl.
He might have been horrendous and disgusting and well deserving of the nickname The Troll which unbeknownst to him his friend Sean had started, but he was a romantic at heart. All he wanted was to be in love. He knew he would be a good boyfriend. He would treat whoever he was with right. He would give them just the right amount of attention but not be too clingy. He would never choose his friends over her or do anything selfish and insulting to her. He would make it his duty to be the best boyfriend he could be.
The only problem was no girl in their right mind was going to date Harry “The Troll” Sherman. Even the ugly girls, who themselves were worthy of some colorful nicknames, seem repulsed by them and the ones that weren’t Harry couldn’t get anyway because of his horrific awkwardness that never seemed to leave him no matter how hard he tried to fit in.

So despite his not liking his friends very much, they were all he had and for all he knew all he would ever have so he stuck around despite the insults and being forced by Sean “I’m the leader so we do what I say” Tinker into going into Godric’s Woods, a place that scared the hell out of him.
“You shouldn’t laugh about it Jeremy, people really have gone missing and people have been killed in here like Caleb’s brother.” Harry said responding to Jeremy’s snicker.

Both Sean and Jeremy shot a look at each that actually seemed compassionate. Even though Sean could be a dick and Jeremy basically followed in his footstep’s they weren’t without feelings and it was impossible to not feel bad for Caleb Matthew. Caleb’s little brother had been snatched up by a man one day right in front of Caleb and his parents. The man had taken off into the woods after him and Caleb and his family took off right behind him. They chased him deep into the woods only to have the man pointlessly toss

Caleb’s brother Eddie down into a well killing him on impact.
To make matter’s worse after that Caleb’s father had snapped and savagely killed Caleb, his friends and even one of his friends mother. Two of Caleb’s friends were never even found but the ones that were had been massacred.
Caleb’s head was never found either.

To make things even stranger, Caleb’s dad Lucas had blamed the whole thing on an alien who he said killed his son and took his head away with him in a spaceship. He said he had chased the thing into the woods and it got away right after chopping off his own hand. The psycho had actually severed his own hand in his madness. Luckily for the people of Orange Grove, he was safely tucked away in Craven Asylum.

There were many stories like that in Orange Grove and it always increased the fear and mystery that was Godric’s Woods.

“Harry, that man killed Caleb’s brother and his father killed the rest. That has nothing to do with the woods. It’s not like the trees got them.” Sean said and laughed and Jeremy laughed with him.
“Yeah but it happened in the woods!” Harry almost screamed. Sean recoiled a little bit at the sound of Harry’s exuberant shout. On reflex he quickly looked around to make sure no one heard and then remembered where he was. Harry was always embarrassing him and he constantly had to be on the lookout that no one was making fun of him because of his stupid disgusting friend.
“Caleb’s brother might have been killed in the woods but him and his friends died in their homes. It had nothing to do with the woods.” Sean said.
“Yeah. Not every bad thing that happens can be blamed on this place.” Jeremy added.
“But…but…” Harry started but he actually couldn’t think of what to say. A part of him wondered why he was arguing. Did he actually want the woods to be blamed? Did he want the place to be dark and evil and just waiting to kill them?
‘I just want to get out of here.’ He thought. But he knew that wasn’t going to happen any time soon. Sean seemed satisfied in ending the conversation and was back to plugging forward through the woods. The three of them walked for quite a while, much longer then they had originally planned but something just seemed to compel them to keep walking even Harry who was terrified.
Finally Jeremy stopped walking and spoke up.
“Whoa guy’s it’s gotten really dark out.”
Sean and Harry both stopped at the sound of his words, something seemed to click and they both looked around noticing the dark for the first time just like Jeremy had done.
“How long have we been walking?” Sean asked. Harry was beginning to shake.
“We need to get out of here.” Harry said.
“How did this happen? How did we not notice that it was getting dark? Does it feel like we’ve been out here for a while?” Jeremy asked.
“I don’t remember. I don’t even remember what we’ve done.” Sean replied.
“I told you! It’s the woods! It’s trying to get us lost or lead us somewhere. It wants us to disappear!” Harry screamed. Sean had a strong urge to slap him. He started to stop himself and then realized there was no reason to so he smacked him hard across the face.
“Ow! Why did you do that?” Harry cried, tears welling up in his eyes.
“Because I’m sick of this haunted woods bullshit. Stop being a child. We just lost track of time, there’s nothing out here.”
That’s when they heard it. It wasn’t much, just a rustling of bushes and snapping of branches. It started out quietly but the closer it got the louder and more ferocious it became.
“What is that?” Jeremy asked starting to shake himself.
“Hide!” Harry yelled and took off running. His two friends watched him jump behind a log and lay himself flat until he was hidden from sight. It was actually quite dark in the woods now and he was actually carefully hidden. Sean and Jeremy shared a look between each other and then back at the sound of the approaching whatever it was.
“Probably just a deer or something.” Sean said.
“Yeah…a deer.” Jeremy replied but just like always his imagination was running away from him. He looked back at Sean and realized that he wasn’t the only one. Sean looked just as scared as him. Quickly without saying another word they both took off running in separate directions. Sean slid behind a large boulder and Jeremy lied down in a ditch. The noises got louder and now there were new noises being added to it.
Besides the bushes and branches, a low growl accompanied the sounds as well as a loud stomping of feet. It was so thick and heavy it nearly shook the ground. Sean was closest to the creature and was the only one of the group not lying prone on the ground and he thought that if the stomping continued he would be thrown from his hiding spot.
But then suddenly the stomping stopped as did the sounds of the wildlife being moved and broken. The low growl remained and a sudden snort accompanied it as well. It was a disgusting wet sound that made Sean want to barf. Next he heard a heavy sniffing sound like a dog trying to find food or its prey.
‘It’s trying to sniff us out!’ Sean thought with horror. He braced himself up against the rock trying as hard as he could not to cry out and alert the beast of his presence.
The stomping returned and got louder and closer to him. The monster was coming straight for him. Sean started to shake and felt like he was going to cry and pee himself at the same time. Somehow he held back on both fronts. The monster was right behind the boulder now; he could feel it standing there. Suddenly a gigantic hand collapsed on top of the boulder. The things long hairy fingers were inches from Sean’s face.
Sean almost screamed when the hand clamped down on the rock but was once again able to control himself. He had to slap a hand over his mouth to hide his whimpering but he kept his wits about him and didn’t scream or go running in fear. But he didn’t know how long that was going to help him. The hand gripped tighter around the rock and the beast began to lean in over the boulder.
‘It’s going to find me!’ Sean squealed inside his head. Closer and closer the monster got but just before it was about to find the young boy, it suddenly shot it’s head up and looked to it’s left.
The exact direction Harry was hiding.

Suddenly the creature let out an incredibly loud roar. It was low and monstrous and shook the very trees. Then the monster took off bounding towards the log that Harry was hidden behind.
Harry had watched the monster approach Sean and in the moonlight he could tell exactly what it was that was coming for them. He had been just as terrified as Sean even though it was his friend that was in immediate danger. He had been so afraid he had done what Sean had been able to keep himself from doing. He pissed all over his pants. As soon as he let loose, the monster looked over at him. Harry nearly screamed. In fact he would’ve if he had been able to find his voice.
The beast sniffed the air and then an instant later came barreling straight towards him. It ran so fast and hard that the ground shook. The log Harry was hiding behind actually came up off the ground for a second. Harry knew he should run but he was too scared to do anything. So he just sat there watching as the giant came after him with its huge muscular arms outstretched wanted to grasp him in its coarse hairy hands.
The monster did just that.
It reached the log and easily plucked Harry from his hiding place. Now Harry was able to scream. He let out a loud womanly wail that scratched his throat with its volume and ferocity.
“Help me!” He screamed and it would be his last. Just as quickly as the monster picked him up, it brought him to its huge mouth and in one swift motion bit off Harry’s head and swallowed it down its throat.
Sean watched all this in terror. He didn’t know why the monster had taken off after Harry but whatever his friend had done, even inadvertently, it had saved him. But it had also been Harry’s doom. He watched as the beast picked him up and he heard Harry’s shout. He felt so bad for his friend and had even started to cry when Harry’s head was bitten off. He instantly regretted picking on him and knew he should’ve been a better friend. Harry had died for him.
He wanted to shout out, scream horrible things at the monster but even though he was upset he wasn’t an idiot and he knew that would only get him killed.
Jeremy wasn’t as smart.
“Harry!” He screamed from his hiding place in the ditch. Jeremy had watched both encounters and had tried as hard as he could to keep quiet as Sean had done but watching his friend die was too much for him. His emotions took over and he shouted out for his lost friend.
That was a mistake.
The monster had been prepared to finish off Harry’s body but upon hearing Jeremy scream, he immediately dropped his meal and took off towards the sound of the yell. Once the monster started charging toward him, Jeremy didn’t sit around and waits like Harry. He leaped out of the ditch and took off as fast as he could back the way the three young boys had gone.
He didn’t get far.
The monster caught up with him quickly and picked him up so suddenly, Jeremy’s legs kept running in mid air.
“Sean help me!” Jeremy screamed but his friend could only watch in horror unable to move to the boy’s aid.
This time, the beast didn’t quickly bite off Jeremy’s head like it had done Harry. Instead it gripped him tightly around the shoulders and moved its other hand which was around his torso and moved it down to his legs. Then in one quick motion it pulled in separate directions ripping Jeremy’s body in two. Blood and intestines poured out and fell towards the ground but only seconds after they started to topple out, the monster leaned down and caught them in his mouth greedily gobbling them up. Then it began to work on the rest of Jeremy’s body. It placed one half of his severed body in his mouth and sucked long and hard draining him of everything inside and then it did the same for his other half. When the monster was done, it dropped Jeremy’s loose pieces on skin onto the ground and left them there while it returned to Harry. For him it chose to shove his entire plump body into his mouth and chew him up.
Sean was disgusted and horrified. He felt like vomiting, screaming and fainting all at the same time but somehow managed to not do any. He stayed hidden behind the rock allowing his endless shaking to be the only visible sign of fear. He watched while the thing ate his friends and he was sure that he was going to be next. He thought many times about taking his chances and running off but a smarter more reasonable part of him told him that if it knew he was there it would have killed him quickly like he did Jeremy. It wouldn’t just leave him there behind the rock.
It turned out that he was right. When the monster was finished eating Harry, which didn’t take long, it sniffed the air a couple of times, let out a large belch, scratched itself and then stomped back from wherever it came.
Even though the thing had left, Sean still remained behind the rock. He wanted desperately to leave but he wasn’t sure that the thing was really gone. For all he knew it was just playing a sick game with him and as soon as he stepped from the rock, it was going to spring out from its hiding place and devour him like it had done his friends. He still couldn’t believe it had happened. It had all been so fast; his mind was having trouble processing it.
‘Are they really dead? Did that really just happen?’ He thought. Even though it didn’t seem real, he knew it had. He had witnessed both of them murdered and eaten by some unseen creature. He wondered if it would’ve made it better or worse if he could see the monstrosity and know just what had murdered his buddies.
He waited awhile longer and finally after he had calmed himself a tiny bit, he decided to leave. It took him awhile before he could finally build up the courage but then carefully he picked up his right foot and stepped forward.
Right onto a branch that snapped.
Quickly he pulled his foot back and slapped his hand over his mouth to keep from screaming which is exactly what he felt like doing. Panicked breathes escaped instead and moans of terror. He was sure that he was still being too loud but at the moment he didn’t know if it really mattered.
But nothing happened.
The beast didn’t run back and pluck him from his hiding place adding him to its meal list. He was safe, it hadn’t heard the branch or if it had, it didn’t think anything of it. It was the woods after. There had to be other creatures there besides him and the monster. Then again, the creature might not be very picky about its dinner.
Sean was starting to feel calm again but then his paranoia got the better of him and he was sure that the beast was looming over him and if he looked up all he would see was teeth and darkness. Wanting to dispel of his fear quickly, he looked up and saw nothing. The monster wasn’t there after all.
Now Sean laughed into his hand that was still covering his mouth. It slightly muffled the volume but only a little so he quickly stopped himself.
‘I’m okay. Nothing’s going to happen to me.’ He thought. He was still scared and didn’t believe in that statement fully but he was determined to leave so once again he took a step making sure to not step on anything breakable. When that went successful he took another and another until he was walking out of the woods the way he had come. When he reached Jeremy’s body, he tried as hard as he could to not look at him but he found that easier said then done and glanced down. All that was left was his skin and bones. There wasn’t even that much blood as the monster had probably drank it all. Sean fought the urge to vomit and cry and pressed on.
‘I never should’ve come here. I should’ve listened to Harry.’ Sean thought. As he thought of Harry he actually started to tear up. He surprised himself with his emotions. He thought he hated Harry but he guessed that a part of him deep down actually cared for the little bastard.
“He wasn’t that bad.” He said out loud not liking the choking quality his voice contained. He wiped the tears from his eyes and continued walking. He could see the edge where he had come in. He couldn’t believe it. He was going to make it out. He was a survivor.
That’s when he heard the loud stomping and the trees snapping and falling.
Slowly Sean turned around and saw the monster running straight for him. The moonlight shone through the woods illuminating the creature and Sean instantly got his answer to whether or not he wished he could see it.
He wished it had stayed in the dark.
Now Sean knew just what it was.
He was more of an active boy but still he was aware of fairy tales and legends. He had even heard the legend pertaining to this particular beast.
“Troll.” He whimpered just before it fell upon him and then he was in its stomach and he knew no more.
