Police Say Girl, 15, Lied About Rape

She made up an abduction story to avoid getting in trouble at home, authorities say

Houston, Texas - A 15 year-old girl who claimed she was snatched off the street and raped by three men was actually having sex with a man she met on the Internet and lied to investigators to avoid getting in trouble, Houston police announced Friday.

The girl's story, which launched a manhunt involving the Police Department and the FBI and galvanized community activists, unraveled Friday when she confessed to investigators, according to Houston police Lt. Robert Manzo.

Investigators did not say what led the girl to confess, Manzo said.

"She made it up because she did not want to get in trouble with her parents," he said. The girl told investigators the sexual encounter with the man she met online was consensual, Manzo said.

The encounter will be looked at as a possible statutory rape, and the girl may face a charge of filing a false police report, he said.

Houstonians were stunned to learn of the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of the teenager which, according to her story, happened Jan. 19 as she walked to her grandmother's house in the Third Ward area.

The girl made up a detailed lie, Manzo said. She said the men drove up alongside her, pulled a pistol and ordered her into the car.

She described being taken to a house in the Hobby Airport area, recalled seeing a street sign and described her attackers to a police artist who produced composite sketches of two of the "suspects."

She told authorities she was dropped off the next morning near Catalina and Gulf Meadows.

Though the girl's claims did frighten some neighborhood residents, some of the details drew skepticism from others who frequently gather near the intersection where she said the abduction occurred. Several people interviewed by the Houston Chronicle earlier this week questioned how such an abduction in broad daylight could have occurred without anyone seeing it.

Terry Ledet Gardiner, 42, owner of the Jet Set Barber Shop in the Third Ward near the intersection of Dowling Street and Wheeler Avenue said the girl's story sounded unlikely given how busy the streets are during the day.

"The story was strange," he said. "It's just incredible. You try to watch your children and one of them puts the whole neighborhood in an uproar."

"She lied and had police jacking up people around here for nothing."

Police received dozens of calls from tipsters claiming to know the identities of the men the girl described, Manzo said. One caller told police that he would "bet his life" on his hunch on who the men were, Manzo said.

The outpouring of concern was understandable, the spokesman said.

"Think about the crime she reported," he said. "Here we have an innocent 15-year-old walking to her grandmother's house and getting brutally assaulted. It's something we took very seriously."

So did community activists such as Quanell X, who had planned to hold a rally in support of the girl.

Instead, he has scheduled a public appearance with the parents of the girl at the SHAPE Community Center this weekend.

"The family will join me on Sunday and I will make the statement on their behalf," he said.
