The Wolverine

After X-Men: Origins: Wolverine grossed a sizable $87m in the U.S. in its opening weekend, 20th Century Fox has moved quickly to greenlight a sequel.

Variety reports that the studio, along with Hugh Jackman and Seed Productions, has begun to plan the follow-up, although a writer has yet to be hired.

As expected, it will focus on the Japanese-set storyline that Jackman has been angling for in recent interviews, where his character – in an effort to control his bestial ways – trains in the way of the samurai, and also falls in love with the daughter of a Yakuza crime lord.

Whilst speaking to MTV, Jackman said he'd already been talking to writers about Wolverine 2, and has said that he's "a big fan of the Japanese saga in the comic book."

He went on: "There are so many areas of that Japanese story. I love the idea of this kind of anarchic character, the outsider, being in this world -- I can see it aesthetically, too -- full of honour and tradition and customs and someone who's really anti-all of that, and trying to negotiate his way. The idea of the samurai, too -- and the tradition there. It's really great. In the comic book he gets his ass kicked by a couple of samurai -- not even mutants. He's shocked by that at first."

Jackman also hinted at another interesting element of this particular plot: "There's also a great, very intricate story there with Mariko. And so many cool ways we could go."

However, it seemed to be the intention that, Wolverine can also serve as a straight prequel to the first X-Men: "It was also another one of my goals that you could see the end of this movie parlaying straight into X-Men, finding that guy in the bar, fighting, drinking, with not much recollection of what's going on."

Wolverine showed up at this weekend's Teen Choice Awards to talk about his continued adventures and made a rather exciting revelation.

Holding up his award, shaped like a surfboard, Hugh Jackman told the crowd, "Who knows, maybe Wolverine will use one of these when he heads to Japan."

He later confirmed to MTV that the plan is to follow Frank Miller's classic Wolverine story arc as the character travels to Japan and broadens his combat skills. While the post-credit sequence in Wolverine hinted as much, and Jackman has frequently said the same, the actor seems to be firming up the rumors.

"Japan is where we're heading, [and] we're starting to work on it now," said Jackman. "We're in the ... first steps of developing that story... I think the fans love that saga. It's my favorite saga of the Wolverine stories. That's a movie I've longed to make from the beginning, so that's where we're heading."

Christopher McQuarrie has been tapped by 20th Century Fox to write the sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the film that Hugh Jackman is developing to reprise his role as razor-clawed protag Logan.

The studio hasn't yet determined timing or whether Gavin Hood will return as director.

McQuarrie has a history with "X-Men," as he worked on the first film with director Bryan Singer but didn't take a credit.

He pitched his take several days ago for a storyline that is set in Japan and based on the Chris Claremont-Frank Miller comicbook series "The Samurai."

Story centers on Logan's evolution into a samurai.

Jackman is producing with John Palermo and Lauren Shuler Donner.
McQuarrie most recently scripted and produced "Valkyrie."

While discussing the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Donner was asked if director Gavin Hood would return for the sequel. She hedged.

"You know, we're just going to get the script right first," was her response. "A little extra polish. … We're very excited. It's going to be a great script."

So it's safe to say that Hood may not be back for Wolvie's continued adventures. But the script is being developed right now, with The Usual Suspects' Christopher McQuarrie writing it.

The much-loved Wolverine-in-Japan storyline will be the focus of the sequel of course, which Donner points out was originally meant to be the plot of the first film until studio Fox asked for an origin story instead.

"Well, they had a reason for that," Donner explained. "They wanted to make sure that we weren't just taking for granted that people saw the X-Men trilogy, we didn't take for granted that people were coming into the movie and knew who Wolverine was. And they felt that they needed to lay that basement, that framework, by doing this movie."

The producer adds that while she wants to stay as true to the comics as possible with the sequel, there are many voices that must be heard when making a film -- the director's voice, the studio's voice, the actors' voices, and so on.

"And there's other factors and other voices," she continued. "Gavin said that he wanted, for example, [in the first film] to show Logan's backstory about his father and to understand for him as a director why the character is motivated. And he chose to show Victor Creed as the half-brother because it would help this conflict. So there are many factors. I unfortunately do not make the movie alone. Or fortunately!"

Wolverine 2, according to X-Men series producer Lauren Shuler Donner, is "the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil."

In an interview with Empire Online, Shuler Donner confirmed that the sequel will take place in Japan, a storyline that she said had been intended to be used for X-Men Origins: Wolverine until the 20th Century Fox brass decided to make it an origin story instead.

Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie will base his script on the classic Chris Claremont & Frank Miller storyline from the comics that chronicled Logan's spell in Japan and his relationship with Mariko Yashida, whose father was a Yakuza boss.

"What's cool about this part of the saga is that Wolverine will be fighting in a different style to what we've seen before. Mariko's father has this stick-like weapon, so Wolverine will have to fight against that," Shuler Donner explained. "There'll be samurai, ninja, katana blades, different forms of martial arts - mano-a-mano, extreme fighting. We're going to come up with a new style of fighting. It's going to be awesome."

Despite the fear and uncertainty swirling around Wolverine 2 after the underwhelming first standalone film, one man can be counted upon to accentuate the positive. And it’s helpful that he’s not only the star, but also one of the people charged with getting the sequel back on track.

Yes, Hugh Jackman is promising big things.

First on his list? Appearing to fully confirm recent reports that Darren Aronofsky has locked down his deal to make the movie.

“Aronofsky’s going to make it fantastic,” he told Vulture when the site cornered him at a swanky charity gala thrown by Elton John. “There’s going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theatre, for sure.”

But though he seems confident that Aronofsky will work his moody, stylish magic on the movie, he’s already happy with the screenplay, which itself dangles the opportunity for Logan to explore some meaner themes. “This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He’s kind of dark. But, you know, this is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects, has written the script, so that’ll give you a good clue. This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It’s going to be the best one, I hope. Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different."

Jackman, meanwhile, is doing his part by eating six protein-heavy meals a day, avoiding carbs and working out like a maniac to start bulking up to play Logan again.

With filming reportedly set for next March in New York and Japan, we’re just going to cross our giant adamantium blades that Wolverine’s sequel can live up to Jackman’s belief in it.

Great news on the sequel to Hugh Jackman’s solo spin-off of the X-Men franchise today.

Director Darren Aronofsky tells Drew McWeeny at Hitfix that the official title of the film will be The Wolverine.

Jackman recently said this film will be “very different” from the first film, and Aronofsky seems to validate that point. The director emphasized that The Wolverine isn’t a sequel in the conventional sense, referring to the movie as a one-off.

Hitfix also reports that Aronofsky’s frequent collaborator Matthew Libatique will shoot the picture. Libatique coming aboard to be the cinematographer is very good news indeed. He shot both Iron Man films and recently finished work on Jon Favreau’s upcoming western/sci-fi epic Cowboys & Aliens. This being Aronofsky’s first foray into relatively commercial/tentpole fare, Libatique’s experience should be a fantastic asset.

Not a great deal of information is known about the film so far, save for the fact that Hugh Jackman is starring and the majority of it will be set in Japant. Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) is writing the screenplay and filming is set to begin in March. They’ll shoot in New York for a while, and then the crew will move to Japan to shoot the rest of the film.

Aronofsky’s Black Swan is currently enjoying wildly enthusiastic critical acclaim, and he’ll certainly be busy come Academy Awards time in February. He recently signed on to direct Machine Man after he finishes The Wolverine. Jackman just wrapped filming Shawn Levy’s sci-fi/action film Real Steel.

The Wolverine is set to be released sometime in 2012.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Hugh Jackman can’t wait to unleash his adamantium claws again!

Access Hollywood caught up with the star at Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego where he gave us the scoop on the follow-up to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

“Script is done for ‘Wolverine.’ I’m literally – this afternoon – going to be meeting up with the director James Mangold,” Hugh told Access at the “Real Steel” event on Thursday.

“We are shooting in October,” he said of “The Wolverine.” “Very excited about it.”

Also at the event, Hugh confirmed the movie’s villain would be Kenuichio Harada, known as Silver Samurai.

“That should be exciting,” he told reporters about battling the mutant who has the ability to produce energy, which he uses as a sword – energy capable of destroying anything except Wolverine’s adamantium.

Hugh also told Access that he’s not sure when Marvel’s most beloved mutant will hit the big screen.

“I don’t worry about that, I just worry about the shooting bit,” he added with a smile.

Jessica Biel Offered a Major Role in WOLVERINE

Quote:
Early reports have 7th Heaven alumna Jessica Biel having been offered a role in The Wolverine. We recently reported on a slew of casting additions to James Mangold’s (Walk the Line) film starring Hugh Jackman in the title role.
Now it looks like a major player in the plot may have been cast.
Biel is reportedly being offered the role of Viper, a character often found conflicting with The Avengers as a high-ranking officer in Hydra, but one that has a complex backstory with Wolverine as well.
Viper, or Madame Hydra, is said to be of Eastern European descent, which Biel can pull off. The character’s association with Wolverine is complex, involving a forced marriage through blackmail, mortal wounds due to spirit possession and, believe it or not, even actual emotional attachment. This arc would fit in well with the web of betrayal and heartbreak laid out by the other characters in Claremont/Miller story.

Rumour: Famke Janssen set to cameo in The Wolverine?
Will Jean Grey be making her return?

Quote:
There’s been much geek debate as to just how The Wolverine will fit in with the continuity of the existing X-Men universe, and it seems that a familiar face will be dropping in to tie a few story strands together.

According to We Got This Covered, Famke Janssen has filmed a cameo role in James Mangold’s film, appearing as Wolvie’s long-standing love interest, Jean Grey.

The last time we saw Jean, she was dying in Wolverine’s arms at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand, having been overcome by the terrible power of the Phoenix. However, since The Wolverine takes place before the events of that film, it makes sense that she could appear here.
