Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim"
Charlie Hunnam, who plays the lead Jax Teller on FX's "Sons of Anarchy," spends most of his time riding on motorcycles, punching dudes in the face and blowing crap up.
But if you thought the extent of his badassery ended there...well, wait until you see him fight giant monsters. Hunnam is in talks for the starring role in Guillermo del Toro's ("Hellboy," "Pan's Labyrinth") latest, big-budget creature feature "Pacific Rim." According to Deadline, the movie would see Hunnam battling monsters -- who are wiping out the planet city by city and must be stopped! -- using advanced weaponry that only a dashing young gentlemen with flowing blonde locks can operate. Maybe not that last part, but it seems logical, especially now that Hunnam is one step away from locking the role. Del Toro, an in-demand director with an eye for the fantastical, has had a tricky time mounting a project since his last film, "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," hit theaters in 2008. He was once slated to direct Peter Jackson's two "Hobbit" features, but then the possibility of production collapsing under financial strain was too much. He bailed. Then he had his pet project "At the Mountains of Madness" setup with Tom Cruise starring and James Cameron producing. Perfect trio? Guess not -- Universal put the kibosh on the pricey blockbuster. But now there's "Pacific Rim," one of production company Legendary Pictures (the people behind "The Dark Knight") many "in development," monster movies, including a Godzilla remake and a sea monster movie with director Paul Greengrass entitled "Here There Be Monsters." Are over-sized, destructive beasts the new vampires? Hunnam seems like a great fit for the epic battle film and who better to breakout an actor of his caliber than the imaginative Guillermo del Toro. Now that he's basically been secured, "Pacific Rim" should be rolling cameras for a 2012/2013 release in the near future. Pending any monster attacks, of course.

Pending it going the same way as "At The Mountains Of Madness" I don't think anything is secure anymore sadly.

Guillermo Del Toro has locked in his second actor to drive a giant robot in a battle with aliens.
Idris Elba, best known as Stringer Bell on The Wire and also recently seen in Thor, will now officially join Charlie Hunnam in Pacific Rim, the upcoming film from the director of Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth. Elba will reportedly play a leading role as a character named Sensi in the epic battle film about humans developing giant robots to battle aliens who invade the Earth on both sides of the Pacific. Deadline broke the news of the casting and said that Elba’s role was originally developed for Tom Cruise, who was excited to work with Del Toro on In the Mountains of Madness before that project died and the director moved to Pacific Rim. Cruise has already settled on another sci-fi starring vehicle though (Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion) leaving the role open for Elba. Elba was up for Django Unchained, is currently shooting Prometheus with Ridley Scott and then he’ll move to Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim is scheduled for release in 2013.

Director Guillermo del Toro has chatted a little about his next film Pacific Rim, branding it “the biggest giant monster movie ever made”.
While his plans to make Lovecraft epic At The Mountains Of Madness fell through, del Toro’s clearly having a ball crafting Pacific Rim instead. Collider caught up with the director, and asked him how things are going on the PG-13 horror. “Fantastic. I mean so far, knock on wood, it’s the greatest experience of my life,” enthuses the director. “I’m having a blast, designing like crazy. I’m now hiring actors, which is always a good sign, always a great sign when you’re casting. “The other thing that we’re heading towards is an impending start date the first week in November, so we have 20 weeks to start shooting the biggest giant monster movie ever made.” Set on an alternate version of Earth, Pacific Rim takes place in the near future, and sees men using giant robots to fight invading aliens. Pacific Rim opens 12 July 2013.

Man, hopefully this film will be a big success and he can parlay that into getting At the Mountains of Madness rebooted.

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro is about to embark on his largest endeavor of his career - literally and figuratively.
Del Toro is back behind the camera (as of Monday) for Pacific Rim, a giant monster vs robot movie that will star Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Rob Kazinsky, and now Ron Perlman. Perlman has starred in del Toro's Hellboy, Hellboy II, Blade II and Cronos. In speaking with Wired, he also revealed his intent for Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures' enormous battle -- to make it completely realistic: "It’s really, it’s a very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters. Giant monsters versus giant robots. Twenty-five-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters," said del Toro. "We’re trying to create a world in which the characters are real and how it would affect our world politically, how it would affect the landscape if creatures like this really came out of the sea, etc." In theaters May 10, 2013, the pic is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.
