Where the Wild Things Are

Not quite a horror movie, but exciting enough to post anyway:

The trailer for Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, based on the beloved children's book by Maurice Sendak, was released today.

It looks pretty incredible, especially if you grew up with the book. Jonze has always had an incredible vision, first with his music videos, then bringing the unique work of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman to life. It looks like his direction is going to work perfectly with the story. I know that he and co-writer Dave Eggers (McSweeney's founder, author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) worked closely with Sendak as they were writing the script, so that's exciting as well.

IMDb's release dates:

Netherlands - 15 October 2009
Brazil - 16 October 2009
USA - 16 October 2009
Belgium 21 October 2009
Argentina - 22 October 2009
Czech Republic - 29 October 2009
Russia - 5 November 2009
Australia - 10 December 2009
Spain - 18 December 2009
Japan - 2010
Norway - 15 January 2010

Ditto.

It does look pretty cool. Hopefully it'll be a return to form for the family movie. There hasn't really been anything decent done in that field since the 80s.

Oh. My. GOD does that look incredible. Fun, happy, whimsical. And it appears as though he's using massive costumes and puppets instead of CGI.

I'm also a complete and utter sucker for this trailer as it artfully uses one of my favorite bands, Arcade Fire.

I'm psyched. I truly am. I hope it's an epic fantastical masterpiece from start to finish... And I hope it's not disappointing (there is that concern of course).

I know! Very exciting.
Yeah, Henson Studios is actually responsible for the wild things, and their mastery is evident.

I have to say I'm optimistic for it indeed being epic, fantastical, and a masterpiece, because the one book I've read by co-writer Dave Eggers (a memoir called A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) is all of those things. He's a very, very gifted writer, and working alongside Jonze and Maurice Sendak himself, I would be really surprised if it turns out to be a disappointment.

And yeah, the song works great in that trailer, too.
But of course, you never know...
