Blind Date Rapist
VENTURA, Calif. - A rape victim spotted her alleged attacker on the television show "Blind Date" and notified police.
Ulrick Kevin White, 31, of Santa Barbara was arrested by Santa Barbara police detectives at the request of Ventura investigators. He was booked Tuesday for investigation of rape and kidnapping. The 35-year-old Ventura victim videotaped his "Blind Date" appearance. "She made a tape and brought it to me, and we reviewed it here," Detective Russ Robinson said Tuesday. "She said, 'Yeah that's the guy.'" White, a handyman and private security guard, was arrested Sunday, said Lt. Paul McCaffrey of the Santa Barbara Police Department. "Blind Date" show spokesman Joe Schloesser wouldn't give details about the show's screening process for participants. "Blind Date," which is distributed by NBC Universal Domestic Television, is a half-hour reality show that brings singles together for an outing. White has been sought since Sept. 6, 2003, when he allegedly approached the victim at a parking lot outside a Ventura bar as she was waiting for a cab, police said. "He coaxes her into the car, she didn't really want to get in," Robinson said. "He initially headed in the direction of her home and then pulled off to a secluded area. That's when she started to believe that something bad was going to happen." During the rape, the victim dialed 911 on her cellular telephone, hoping her location could be pinpointed, investigators said. The sexual assault was recorded by a California Highway Patrol dispatcher. Two months after the alleged 2003 rape, White was arrested in Santa Barbara for allegedly breaking into the Bath Street home of a 22-year-old University of California, Santa Barbara, student, police said. White denied breaking in and told police he had been invited in to her home. Detectives said the case is still open.
