A Brooklyn cross-dresser with a penchant for bizarre porn, religious artifacts and Vietnam War memorabilia was charged with beating his elderly roommate to death after an argument over the rent, officials said yesterday.
Howard Goldstein, 56, was under arrest for allegedly killing 75-year-old Rahamin "Raymond" Sultan with a blunt instrument, possibly a bat.

Cops were tipped off that Sultan had been missing since Sunday and showed up at his East 19th Street apartment in Midwood on Tuesday.

Goldstein answered the door in high heels, makeup, lipstick — and a filthy pair of slacks. He initially told police he hadn't seen his roommate, but cops noticed a foul smell and found Sultan's body in a pool of blood on the living-room floor.

The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt- and sharp-force injuries with a skull fracture and laceration of the brain.

Neighbors said Goldstein moved into Sultan's apartment a year ago, after the older man's wife died, and had been helping with the rent.

Inside Goldstein's locked bedroom, cops found walls plastered with pornographic pictures and portraits of Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, the Lubavitch sect leader.

Next to his bed stood a rubber sex doll dressed in black lace, with custom-made water-bottle-top nipples.

An upturned mattress lay next to boxes stuffed with religious books and horror videotapes, including the classic cross-dressing slasher film "Psycho."

A door was covered with Vietnam War-era clippings, photographs of POWs and leaflets about MIA servicemen.

Rabbi Abraham Heller of the Beth Aharom congregation in Brooklyn described Sultan as "the kindest, gentlest soul you can imagine."

"He grew up with poor parents on the Lower East Side and he was given up for adoption," he said.

"He became very close to so many synagogues, congregations and rabbis, and since his wife died he had re-dedicated himself to studying the Talmud and the Torah."

Heller said Goldstein came from a broken home and served in Vietnam, but had become destitute and often "came around the synagogues begging for money.

"Raymond took him in because he was concerned for him," said Heller.

The tall, bearded suspect often dressed in traditional Orthodox Jewish garb, neighbors said. But he occasionally sported exaggerated painted eyebrows reminiscent of Divine, the transvestite star of John Waters' cult movie "Pink Flamingos."

Cops believe the killing took place Sunday night after Sultan asked Goldstein to pay his share of the rent.
