Cronenberg's "Shivers" getting remade

The announcement was made from producers Jeff Sackman and Michael Baker, who play to shoot a remake to Cronenberg's 1975 debut (which was produced by "Ghostbusters" filmmaker Ivan Reitman), early next year.

Danish filmmaker Rie Rasmussen will direct the project from a screenplay written by Ian Driscoll, with plans to update the tale for modern audiences.

If you haven't seen the original "Shivers," which has a commemorative screening at TIFF this year, it's a gross-out kick, involving a luxury apartment complex that is invaded by parasites that turn its residents into sex crazed beasts. It's really awesome and extreme and hilarious, and it'll be interesting to see if the new filmmakers can walk that final tonal tightrope and come out on the other side unscathed.

Rie Rasmussen is a strange pick to direct. I've only seen her act twice in Femme Fatale and Angel-A. I think I have one of her movies on my watch list. I remember checking her site to see her artwork a long time ago.

I think Shivers is one of Cronenberg's wild movies. I like it. And not just for Lynn Lowry's topless scene. It's one of those end of days movies like The Thing or Cronenberg's other movie that I can't remember right now that had I believe a pornstar in the starring role.

The is one of the few essential horror movies I haven't seen that I really should have done by now!
Would a remake of Shivers be considered sacrilege to some?
Or would it be classed as a rough diamond for want of a better phrase?

I wouldn't call any film/director sacred, but it's difficult to imagine how they're going to remake a Cronenberg.

Either they will try and recreate the impact of a Cronenberg film and probably fail miserably, or it will just be a "reimagining" in which case it might be ok, might not...
