In the movie wasn't that the same actor who played Charles Manson?
That would be the great Steve Railsback.

Amazingly, in 7 pages, I managed to learn nothing about Ed Gein(or Gien, if you prefer it the way the OP spells it).

Read the original press clippings my dad had saved about the case. It caused quite a stir, back in the day. The most interesting thing I had noted in the stories, was how absolutely rattled the cop was, who initially investigated Gein's home(Gein was off having dinner at a neighbor's house). He entered thru the kitchen, and was greeted by the sight of bowls(made from human skulls) filled with lips, sexual organs, and various other goodies. Further in, is where he found the "arm" chair, human skin lampshade and Ed's sex change outfit.

He might have gone a lot further into his career, but his last victim wrote his name down in a sales ledger, just before he shot her.

Ed gein was a maniac i watched two movies about him one had the guy that played Jason voorhees that one sucked it went nothing with the true story, it was like friday the 13th ed gein style. But the 2000 version also called in the light of the moon will give you a good idea of just how sick this fella was.
