Grandma Catches Fire...Kids Try To Put her Out
Elderly Woman Dies After Being Badly Burned When Clothes Catch Fire
Tennessee - A Madison County woman died this week after suffering second- and third-degree burns over 80 percent of her body. Lavie Darnell, 81, of Darnell Road in Oakfield, died Sunday afternoon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, from severe thermal injuries, according to her death certificate. She was trying to light her wood-burning stove at 8:01 a.m. Saturday when the sleeve of her gown caught fire, Fire Chief Kelly Holmes said. There were only minor burns to the house, but the chair Darnell sat in to get the flames off her was completely burned, he said. ''She got up and did her regular routine,'' her granddaughter Connie Pirtle said. ''Every morning she got up and started a fire to get it warm in the house.'' Pirtle, 27, and her three children, 12, 7 and 3, lived with Darnell. Pirtle was not home at the time of the fire, but the children were. ''My kids were trying to help her get the fire off,'' Pirtle said. Darnell instructed the children to get away from her so they would not get burned, Pirtle said. Before she was airlifted to Vanderbilt, Darnell was still talking and concerned about the children, Pirtle said. ''She asked if they had gotten burned,'' she said. Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and Vanderbilt doctors talked with Pirtle about the severity of the burns. ''They told me that a person my age probably wouldn't survive the burns, and she was 81 and she was a diabetic,'' Pirtle said. Right now, the children seem to be doing fine, but they will probably have to get counseling, Pirtle said. The funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Salem C.M.E. Church on Ashport Road.
