"Dead Men Walk" (1943)
-George Zucco, Dwight Frye

Plot: IMDB
The twin of a kindly small-town physician returns from the grave as a vampire for vengeance against his brother, who secretly killed him because the twin served Satan.

Phantom's Review: Very low budget attempt to replicate Universals style of film. George Zucco does a credible job as both brothers and Dwight Frye basically redoes his "Reinfield" character. Other than that, this film has very little to offer.

One of my favorite films to watch this time of year.
An incredible classic; Tourneur's direction is as good here as it ever was.

Oh, both are my very favorites. I wish I could have a week long vacation at the end of this month:D...I want to see all the films from my WILLIAM CASTLE BOX SET and few other left in the VAL LEWTON BOX as well as some Bava & Fulci classics also.

"Cry Of The Werewolf" (1944)

Plot: IMDB
Young woman raised by gypsies is actually daughter of a werewolf. She starts killing those who know about her.

Phantom's Review: Dull, horribly acted attempt at a werewolf film. The lead actor has the acting range of a wet towel. The transformation scenes are done off camera and the "Werewolf" is pretty much just a big dog. Truly lousy.

A fun double feature:

1) "Gorgo" (1961)

Plot: IMDB

A salvage vessle is nearly sunk off the Irish coast by an undersea earthquake. A few nights later, a walking sea monster tangles with the fishing boats and enters the town. The salvage vessel captures Gorgo and takes it to London for display. Gorgo's mother, who is upset and significantly larger follows his trail to London leaving a wake of destruction in her path.

Phantom's Review: Entertaining imitation "Godzilla" Interesting story, decent FX and a cool looking monster. Lots of fun.

2) "Mad Monster Party" (1967)
-Boris Karloff

Plot: IMDB

When Dr Frankenstein decides to retire from the monster-making business, he calls an international roster of monsters to a creepy convention to elect his successor. Everyone is there including Dracula, The Werewolf, The Creature, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and many more. But Frankenstein's title is not all that is at stake. The famous doctor has also discovered the secret of total destruction that must not fall into the wrong hands!

Phantom's Review: a Halloween treat for the whole family. You have horror legend Karloff as the voice of Dr. Frankenstein and some entertaining animation from the Rankin-Bass Company. One of my favorites.

I also just watched Cry of the Werewolf, but unlike our Phantom friend, I enjoyed it very much. A poverty row approach to a werewolf story, complete with a noirish group of cops, and the luminescent Nina Foch as a Gypsy princess. Not a great film, but a different look at the classic werewolf tale, taking a Lewton-like approach to storytelling. Also features character actor Fritz Lieber, father of the great science fiction writer.

Also recently saw Gamma People - a delightfully goofy, tongue in cheek British sci-fi film, another that deals with their peculiar obsession with schoolchildren being mutated and used for nefarious means.
