Modern horror movies that push the envelope

I just started watching the remake of Night of the Demons. So far I'm impressed. Although it seems like they might be backing down a bit. The police arrived and everyone but the main actors are leaving the house. But the opening is good and surprisingly raunchy. Which gave me the idea to make this topic.

Are there any modern horror movies that really push the envelope. At least like I thought for example the early Friday the 13th movies did in the following categories:

1. Death scenes. I didn't know how the Italian movies influenced Friday the 13th Part 2 when I originally watched it. But stuff in this movie was wild. The bed spear and machete wheelchair death are all crazy scenes. Same goes for Friday the 13th Part 6. The whole movie is filled with creative scenes. Not just flat out gore either. Like some of the stuff in Hatchet that I think goes too far.

2. Nudity. This is a difficult one to get right. If it is too artistic it's softporn and boring. Go too far and it's pornography. Which no reputable actress/actor will do anyway. But Tom Savini did joke on that Starz special that some actresses in one horror movie were all pornstars. Again, Friday the 13th Part 2 and 6 got it right for the time. Part 2 full nudity scene which I don't think any modern horror I can think of has. Part 6 has that van scene which I thought was cut when I originally watched it. Apparently, censors still think it's too much for normal cable and they cut the scene even though there's no nudity.

3. Dirty Jokes/Raunchy Stuff. Some wild stuff is in Night of the Demons. What one girl does when they are talking about Brazilian wax was unexpected. There is a scene in a strip club too. I immediately thought they aren't going to go there. But they did.

So what have you guys seen that pushes the envelope?

Saw 3 would be a good example of pushing the envelope on both death scenes and nudity. The scene I'm thinking of in particular is when Jeff finds the woman chained in the middle of the cooler and completely nude. Every 20 seconds or so she gets sprayed with water and Jeff has the option to save her but waits to long and she becomes a Popsicle.

I think a lot of modern horror movies could be mentioned here when it comes to brutal violence. But I don't really enjoy "torture porn" at all, so they don't really "push" anything for me personally.

It seems like torture porn is normal horror these days. I kind of remember that Saw 3 scene. But all the Saw movies are a blur to me. The last one I watched was the one with Julie Benz. I guess I'll watch the ones after one day. The movie I was completely disappointed in was Hostel. Many were saying this is the horror movie. But it was another torture porn movie. I guess I'm old school.

I'll review Night of the Demons in the "watched" topic. I could have been better. But it's not completely forgettable.

Well, me too. I never understood the excitement over "Hostel" either. As for the Saw movies, well... I kinda enjoyed them, I mean I must have since I watched them all, but they didn't really deliver what I expect from a horror movie either. But they had good gore, and I kinda liked the whole Jigsaw story. I think it would have worked much better, though, if it had been told over just 1 or 2 movies.

Hostel is total crap... On screen violence, sex, gratuity needs some sort of context and perspective in order to actually push boundaries or challenge the audiance. Everyone has seen hardcore sex and extreme violence on screen these days.

Ugh, I can't even stomach that movie. Talk about a hypocritical, pretentious, vapid piece... not only that but all the tension is flushed down the toilet with the remote.

I thought Teeth pushed the envelope, it's more of a superhero origin story than a straight up horror flick but it was fun. As far as gore goes, give me Inside over Hostel any day.

I'm one who enjoyed Hostel 1 & 2. They have disturbing and realistic premises and overall good acting, I give them both two thumbs up.

Teeth was kind of like Ginger Snaps to me. More about the horror of a girl's changing body. I found Teeth humorous many times.

Hostel was on TV a few nights ago. I watched bits again and found it to be even worse than I remembered.
