Sean Penn was excellent and fit as fuck.. I didn't really like the storyline.

Apollo 18 (2011)

The idea that aliens are the reason that we've never gone back to the Moon is a relatively interesting one to me, and it seems like it would make a rather unique and effective horror movie. Apollo 18 attempts to put this conspiracy theory to film to disappointingly pitiful results. Apollo 18 suggests that the canceled Apollo 18 mission did actually land on the Moon, but it never returned for unknown reasons. The film is shot in the found-footage style, which is supposedly the lost footage from that mission. The crew of the Apollo 18 find evidence of extraterrestrial life on the moon and realize the real reason they were sent to the Moon. The Moon setting certainly makes this movie unique and makes the film rather unsettling, but that is the only creepy or memorable about this lazy and dull found footage schlock. Apollo 18 is actually rather entertaining for the first 20 or so minutes, as we hear strange, otherworldly sounds coming from outside the ship. It's very reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project, until the reveal of the aliens. They don't have much screen time, but when you do see them, it completely ruins the sense of mystery and becomes just another alien horror flick. The first sighting of the extraterrestrials ruined a potentially creepy and memorable scene in which one of the astronauts is screaming that something is "moving around in his helmet." That's also where the movie takes a huge nose-dive and transforms into a generic body-horror film. What makes the movie even more insufferable is the incredibly bland writing. None of the characters have an sort of personality, and the dialog couldn't be any more uninteresting unless Ben Stein was delivering the lines. Apollo 18 could have been the science-fiction equivalent to The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity, but instead is just another tedious and uninspired shaky-cam headache.

This means you are tired of found footage horror?

Nah, I should have mentioned that the shaky cam in this was extremely aggravating, even for me. It's the worst quality found footage I've ever seen; I understand that it's in 1974, but when it's a movie about fucking *spoilers in white* Moon rock aliens, I think they can take a little artistic liberty and make the movie a tad easier to look at. There's also the fact that it doesn't make sense how they would have "found" the footage. It was all either just left on the Moon or destroyed by the aliens.

TERROR TRACT 2000

A jaunty little tale about a real estate agent (John Ritter) trying desperately to make a sale in a neighborhood plagued with murders and supernatural mayhem. Sort of a "Tales from the Crypt" feel to it.

I liked it. Maybe you will too!

100 Ghost Street: The Return of Richard Speck
Home movie style filmed horror seems to be a big thing these days. Oddly I find them still watchable despite the annoying camera movements (until the end where it looks like the guy's filming from a Merry Mixer). The characters and their stupid decisions though make it hard to sit through. Honestly, after the 2nd or 3rd dead guy, you'd think it'd be OBVIOUS that splitting up is BAD IDEA. Horror movie 101 people geezus. The ghost/demon/entity/thing was awful. Angry-Eyed McKillerFace looked a little too fake for my taste. The deaths were more terrifying when you couldn't see him. ...And what's with the Alien clicks before the thing attacks... I don't know. I didn't hate it, but I probably won't ever watch it again.

You really have to put your expectations at non-existent for an Asylum film

Hey I'm actually very fond of Asylum films. Especially haunted ones. XD
Just common sense for the characters and better effects for the killer would have made all the difference for this one.

The Loved Ones (2009)

The Loved Ones is a very strange film to watch. It's an Aussie horror flick that seems like a bizarre cross between Hostel and Pretty in Pink, and it's quite an entertaining experience. When Brent denies the socially awkward Lola's offer to the prom, Lola decides that she's not going to take "no" for an answer. She kidnaps Brent and ties him up in her house to have the last dance of his life. While I usually hate using this term, The Loved Ones is basically a torture porn version of The Cabin in the Woods (which is long overdue for a rewatch), and like Cabin, it transcends genre cliches by being a relentlessly entertaining, gruesome, and often hilarious film. One instance nearly made me fall out my chair with laughter when the crowns for the prom king and queen are revealed to be the plastic hats you get from those little poppers. The second half of The Loved Ones does take a very strange route and mostly loses the tongue-in-cheek humor of the first half of the film, but the quality isn't sacrificed one bit. The Loved Ones certainly isn't for everyone, but it's a must watch if you love gore and dark humor.

Ah yes, The Loved Ones is a terrific watch. Great pacing throughout, a pretty wicked soundtrack and an outstanding performance from the female lead. Seeing your post has made me want to watch it again, right now.
