Weird and tragic coincidence

Saturday, March 14, 2009

An Indiana County boy died Thursday from injuries suffered when he was struck by two vehicles Wednesday in Rayne.

The Cambria County Coroner's office identified the victim as Richard Scalise, 13, of Route 286, Highway East, Rayne.

State police at Indiana said Scalise initially was struck by a 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Lois J. Sokol when he ran onto Route 286 from the north berm of the road. The impact threw Scalise into the eastbound lane, where a 1997 Pontiac driven by Andrew Friday ran over him.

"He was struck by one vehicle and was thrown into the opposite lane where he was struck by a second vehicle going the opposite direction," Pete Long, deputy coroner said. "He was walking along the highway and darted into traffic."

Scalise was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center by medical helicopter, where he was pronounced dead at 12:59 p.m. Thursday in the intensive care unit.

Long said the cause of death was massive closed head injury. The death has been ruled accidental.

A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy is in a critical condition at Alder Hey Hospital, in Liverpool, after being struck by two cars, one of which did not stop.

The North Wales youngster was hit around 7.30pm on Thursday on the A539 between Erbistock and the outskirts of Overton.

From initial inquiries it is believed that as a result of the first collision the nine-year-old boy, from Overton, in Wrexham, collided with the second car travelling in the opposite direction.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "The driver of the first car failed to stop and inquires are underway to trace the driver.

"Police are urging the individual to come forward and contact police immediately. "Similarly they are appealing to anyone who may know the identity if the driver or who may have witnessed the incident to contact officers at the Eastern Roads Policing Unit.

"Police investigations into the collision continue this morning and CCTV from the area is also being studied as part of the investigation."
