Horror Elements

Which horror elements (Classic/Otherwise) would you like to see compiled and utilized (gracefully/tastefully/selectively) in a new modern horror movie? (No, this isn't for a screenplay I'm writing, just up for general discussion because I'm bored, and I thought this would be an interesting discussion topic.)

Some of my favorite Elements:

-The rapid unveiling of nothing, followed by a "something" immediately after a sigh of relief.

-A montage of scary images (a la Event Horizon; although they did reuse shots alot during those, which bugged me.)

-Lack of audio leading up to something.

-Distancing from a horrific event (Sometimes being up close and personal can get repetitive, and it's cooler to see something freaky from a distance [on a monitor, or from across a room.]

-Killing likeable characters.

-Sick and twisted sexual stuff (not for getting my rocks off, but it gives a much more "f'd" up style to the film.)

-Intentionally askew lighting, dim lighting, and no lighting (ambiance).

All I can think of right now. What you got, fool?

("I pity da foo' who don't like horror movies!")

*FADE OUT*

I kinda like the audio leading up to something draws you in more. But I guess surprise would be a better element to posses.

I think that the characters seeing a gruesome act in the distance, and the killer doesnt know that he is being watched. Until the last minute when they try to get away. Like in Jeepers Creepers when the creature throws the bodies down the drain pipe and then turns to see the brother and sister driving away knowing that he has been seen.
