Source:ComingSoon.net, Heather Newgen
September 24, 2008

During Disney's preview today in Hollywood, the studio questioned who could possibly play the titular character in its upcoming feature The Lone Ranger.

At that, Disney rolled out the USC marching band to come down and play the Ranger's theme song. This was followed by an appearance by Depp himself who took to the stage in full Captain Jack Sparrow attire...wearing The Lone Ranger's mask.

The Lone Ranger, said to be an origin story, is written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.

This is a breaking new story, so we'll update you on the project, and Depp's possible involvement, as more details come in.

Mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer says his big screen revamp of The Lone Ranger will take a page from his blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in bringing the Western hero back to cinematic life.

In an exclusive interview with Latino Review, Bruckheimer confirmed that Pirates star Johnny Depp has signed on to play Tonto, the Lone Ranger's partner in crime-fighting.

But when pressed about the rumor that George Clooney might play the title character, Bruckheimer responded, "We don't know. We have a script. We haven't given it to anyone. We're still working on it."

The most revealing thing Bruckheimer had to say about The Lone Ranger was when he was asked about the tone of the film. The CSI and Armageddon producer said, "I think it'll have a supernatural element to it. It's the same writers as Pirates and it'll have a similar kind of thing to it."

The posse's really coming together for Disney's adaptation of The Lone Ranger.

British actress Ruth Wilson (BBC's Luther) was recently cast as the female lead of Rebecca, and now four new actors will be joining Armie Hammer (The Social Network), who will play the titular role, and Johnny Depp, who will play a more expanded version of the Lone Ranger's trusty sidekick Tonto.

THR reports that Dwight Yoakam, Barry Pepper, and Helena Bonham Carter are all in negotiations for the movie, which will be directed by Gore Verbinski (Rango, the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies).

Yoakam would play the movie's villain, Butch Cavendish, the leader of the Cavendish gang that attacks the Texas Rangers. Tom Wilkinson was previously cast as a railroad tycoon with dubious intentions, and we smell some sort of team-up between Wilkinson and Yoakam.

Pepper would play Captain J. Fuller, the leader of the seventh cavalry, while Carter, who is in early discussions for the movie, would play the madam of a brothel who deals with gentlemen and scoundrels.

Variety reports that James Badge Dale, who was recently cast in Paramount's World War Z, is also in talks for The Lone Ranger and would play Dan Reid, the Lone Ranger's older brother and leader of the Texas Rangers. Reportedly, the Cavendish gang attacks the Texas Rangers, leaving Hammer for dead, after which the Ranger assumed the identity of the Lone Ranger. Hopefully for Dale, his role will last longer than after the attack sequence.

Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road) wrote the script for the movie, which is planing to start lensing this fall.

The Lone Ranger opens on December 21, 2012.
