You know what I would love to see: a hard science fiction/horror story

Like the title says, I want to see something that combines horror with hard science, sort of like Arther C Clarke with a mean streak. Something that is monstrous but plausible. There needs to be more stuff like that- except no more copies of Alien. Prometheus might have been a step in the right direction except it was insultingly stupid at points. Does anyone have any recommendations in this regard?

Frankenstein. Hard sf for its day.
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson might qualify, also.
