Man Admitted Killing Housemate

A 19 year-old man - who was stabbed and dismembered after he died - managed to gasp out one desperate question as his life slipped away after a brutal battle with his housemate last week.
"Why did you do this to me?"

Brendon Glen David Martin was coughing up blood and gasping for air when he uttered those words, the man accused in his killing, James M. Baldwin, 22, of Carnegie, told Allegheny County police, according to a police affidavit.

Martin was found dismembered in Collier.

According to court documents, Baldwin told county homicide detectives that a bloody struggle Wednesday ended in Martin's death, after Baldwin ordered Martin to vacate the house they shared within five days.

Baldwin told police he grabbed a "survival knife" and stabbed Martin in the throat and chest only after Martin struck him with a claw hammer. As Martin lay bleeding on the utility room floor asking "why?" Baldwin stabbed the 19-year-old man in the chest again.

"I killed him," Baldwin told police.

Neighbors along the quiet Carnegie street where Baldwin lived with his fiancee and her young daughter were reeling Saturday in reaction to the crime at Baldwin's modest two-story home.

Neighbors said Martin, formerly of Parkersburg, W.Va., and the North Side, moved into the house some time in the last several months.

Although Baldwin bought the house in October 2004 and has lived there since then, he was something of a mystery to his neighbors, many of whom are older homeowners who have lived in the community for years.

"We didn't know them. Nobody really knew them," said next-door neighbor Stephen Haluszczak.

Another neighbor described the young people who resided in the home with the messy porch as "a little odd, but certainly not violent."

Tax records indicate Baldwin was in arrears on his 2005 property taxes, but public records reveal little more about the young man or his housemates.

Court documents detail how Baldwin killed Martin, dismembered his body, packed the remains into plastic bags, put blood stained rags and cleaning materials in a separate bag and drove to a rural area of Collier, where he left the remains behind a mound of dirt, before returning later to bury them in a shallow grave nearby.

Police were guided to the location Thursday morning after a Collier employee who saw someone dumping items along the road Wednesday night contacted Collier police. Investigators recovered a gray backpack containing a piece of paper with Baldwin's name.

Baldwin is being held without bond in the Allegheny County Jail, pending a preliminary hearing Friday on charges of criminal homicide and the abuse of a corpse.
