Is there hypnotism in The Serpent and the Rainbow??

I want to watch The Serpent and the Rainbow, but my wife is not so sure. She is completely terrified by hypnotism! We watched the trailer for the '88 Wes Craven film, and we weren't sure if there would be the goofy, 'look into my eyes' hypnotism-type scenes, or if it was more drugging-mind-control type of scenes.

Has anyone seen this?? Could you let me know??

She's totally fine with things like someone doing something while drugged, or having a magic spell cast on them, but it's the brainwashing/cult/mind games type of hypnotism that she doesn't like.

Thanks!!!

The Serpent and the Raindow is about actual voodoo practices that involve psychotropic/mind altering substances, with a sprinkling of the supernatural. It's a great Craven film and a good horror movie. To answer your original question, no, there's no actual hypnotism involved, it's more like drug induced trances and hallucinations.

Thanks, Oro13, for actual answering his question. He probably read Dead's reply, walked away shaking his head, never to return his goofer dusted mind.

Actually, I would say there is hypnotism in the film, it's just not the Hollywood "watch this swinging pendant", or the 'lay on the couch with a psychiatrist' type. It's drug induced suggestion, and "conscience" suggestion targeting the subconscious, by the voodoo dude.

I'm split on it, honestly. While you definitely make a valid argument to the contrary, I still feel that it doesn't actually count as hypnotism. It's more like an accurate portrayal of what the real zombie process is like ( i.e. Drugging, psychologically traumatizing, and burying/digging up a person ). That's not technically hypnotism, more like reconditioning/mentally breaking a person. Like I said, it's up for interpretation, but I still stick by my previous statement .
