I enjoyed this movie quite a bit.
I love Japanese style horror movies and especially ones that have a psychological element to them.

The entire concept was brilliant. It's not a perfect movie, it's not really scary but I liked it.

I also have a huge crush on Natalie Dormer so that's another reason I liked the movie!

Pass

Save yourself the trouble, this is not a good movie at all. Scares are few and far between and usually cheap jump-scares. Plot has HUGE holes that cannot be over-looked. I'll refrain from further bashing...

The Forest

I bought this before I watched it which I think was my mistake. I was enticed by the idea that it was Japanese based. But unfortunately the elements of Japanese horror is actually not really there. They took the Japanese culture and used American horror with gore and jump scares to try and make the film still scary. I do have to say though, the scene in which the female lead Sara was in the Forest and it was whispering her name, got to me. That was fantastic. My birth name is Sarah and it was perfect the way it felt it was coming from all over. But they really missed the elements of sound with creep that the Japanese are famous for. Over all the movie was not worth buying, it was barely worth watching and I may never watch it again. :(

not similar besides both being in a forest.

I thought it was a 4/10. I'd pass on it.

It's not really based on Japanese horror. It seems to be based on the documentary Vice Essentials - season one - episode one - Suicide Forests. If you can find that, I highly recommend it. The rest of the season isn't that great, but that one episode is one of the best I've seen in a long time.
