Sam Raimi adapting Dennis Lehane book
June 17, 2008
Dennis Lehane is an author in demand at the moment. Ben Affleck's adaptation of Gone Baby Gone hit U.K. screens last month, Martin Scorsese is about to finish work on a film version of Shutter Island, and now Sam Raimi looks set to adapt one of his books. Raimi will re-team with Columbia – the studio who produced all three of his Spider-Man films – on The Given Day, which is set to hit shelves on September 23. According to Variety, the book will be set in Boston in 1919 and deal with the fall-out from soldiers returning from WWI and bringing with them an epidemic of Spanish influenza. Speaking of the project, Raimi said: "While it deals with many of the same themes as [Lehane's] earlier work, it is also his most ambitious book, tying events of a century ago to the subjects we struggle with today." Raimi is also set to shoot a new Jack Ryan adventure for Paramount, while Columbia are currently prepping a script for Spider-Man 4.
