When I was a kid, and I saw a movie one of the characters died in...I had no understanding of effects at all. I didn't think about it too much, but when I did, I assumed they just paid the actors heaps of money, let them live the good life for years, so they could kill them on film.
I guess at that point, Sean Bean hadn't really made the scene.
