The Art of Grandville

Grandville (Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard) was a French artist who lived from 1803 to 1847. He's been a favorite artist of mine for a long time. He specialized in characatures that morphed people with animals, and fantastic dreamlike and haunting images. I'll post some images here for those who might be interested.

I could not find my favorite image online- a picture of a monkey/man type creature standing in front of a doorway... oh well. Hope some folks enjoy these.

NE - These are AMAZING. I'm fascinated by his work - I'm going to have to delve deeper because I want to know more about his technique.

"Apocalypse Du Ballet" reminds me a LOT of Blake's prints in Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. I'd be surprised if Blake didn't take some inspiration here.

I also see inspiration for Dali and the artwork in Alice in Wonderland.

It's clear too that Grandville was inspired by Hieronymus Bosch - I love the twisted animorphs especially.

Yes, Tenneil was clearly influenced. I'm glad you enjoyed them.

I love Blake's work as well. My favorite is the frontspiece to Songs of Innocence, which shows the child on the long ladder, reaching up to the moon, with the caption "I want."

GORGEOUS! I've always been a fan for his artwork on "The Sick Rose" and "A Poison Tree" as well. Blake is one of my all-time favorite poets. I think that his pairing of poetry and imagery is so incredibly and brilliantly subversive.

I am also reminded here of Hogarth's "A Rake's Progress," though Hogarth was much more literal.

I've seen this guy's work before. Political cartoonist for some French publications(back in the day). One of his pieces was a man with an elephant's head. Did he invent the GOP mascot?

He did some political stuff, but he did a lot of other stuff as well- book illustrations etc.
