Question Need Help Identifying Book Title/Author

The cover of the fiction novel shows a man wielding an axe from a rear perspective.

The story is about a disease that came from somewhere south of the U.S.

The main character has a knack for being able to identify the carriers of the disease by their signs or symptoms before anyone else can. He then proceeds to handily dispatch the carrier whereupon he's rewarded with a hunk of chocolate cake by others in their isolated community.

I believe the book has a one word title. Mine was stolen along with my backpack and I recently realized how prophetic the book is but I forgot the title and author, who I believe is from England.

Any inquiries about other details of the story will be promptly responded to.

Sounds very much like Stranger by Simon Clark.

It wouldnt be Outbreak would it?

Admittedly Ive never read the novel that it's based on, but it sounds quite a bit like the movie.

Thank You Very Much, Noctuary:)
That's it all right!!!

BTW this is a relatively good book. I would recommend this book to any person who likes a truly scary story that has a ring of truth or high probability to it.

I joined this forum specifically to find the title and/or author of the book, but as long as I'm here, I'd like to mention that I like most horror books by Clive Barker. Listening to "The Damnation Game" on audio cassette tape is especially enjoyable since it's not just simple narration but it includes complex and realistic sounds too.

Thanks also to all for responding and please pardon my delayed response.
