Superman Returns.
Its amazing how an open mind can influence the point-of-view of watching a movie without being too judgemental. We all thought Bryan Singer did a boo-boo by leaving X-Men 3 for this, but those who have seen it have to admit...Singer's special touch for Superman was very savoring and satisfying.
Yes, it has plenty of throwbacks to the original by Richard Donner (including a cameo by Marlon Brando's "image") and the background score is almost totally John Williams, but still Singer manages to make Returns all his own.
The characterisation is very decent, but I thought Spacey was over-doing a bit in some sequences. Brandon Routh was good (doing remarkably well because he does have to fill rather large shoes left by Christopher Reeve), and Kate Bosworth manages to make Lois Lane believable in parts. Spacey was strong...almost over-strong. I liked James Marsden's Richard White a lot, because he makes a perfect little sidecar to Supe's emotional and jaw-dropping histrionics. My only complaint - the Lex Luthor bashing is becoming a bit too worn out by now...let's see Supe take on someone (or something) else for a welcome change.
Anyone who thinks this movie was disappointing because it didnt have loads of action (ala X-Men) or didnt have the pace...I have a piece of advice. Watch it again, carefully, from beginning till end...and after the end credits start to roll out...let the whole experience sink in. Trust me, you will change your tune and opinion about Returns.
Rating - * * * ½
