Shadow of the Colossus

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the superb Team ICO PlayStation 2 title, Shadow of the Colossus, is set to make the jump to cinema screens.

The trade claims that the film has been picked up for production by Sony Pictures' Kevin Misher, producer of 2002's The Scorpion King and the upcoming remake of classic sci-fi novel-turned-movie Dune.

Attached to pen the script is Justin Marks, currently writing a McG-directed remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo.

Marks, who penned Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, chatted with The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog about the state of videogame-to-film adaptations and what appeals to him about turning Shadow of the Colossus into a movie.

"With a lot of games there are so many elements in the universe you spend your time tearing down and tearing down," Marks told the site. "What's nice about this game is that it's so sparse so you can start building right away." He added, "This is a game that catches you unaware -- it catches you on an emotional and experiential level, not just for the puzzles you solve."

Marks said that he'll avoid the temptations of letting the studio add Hollywood cliches to the story. "What's so nice about this game is that it's all seen through such an adult lens, so that what pleases the fans also pleases a wider audience," he explained.

At this stage, little else is known about the production, and no projected release date has been announced. Producer Misher is currently backing the anticipated John Dillinger biopic, Public Enemies, directed by Michael Mann.

Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment's team behind the critically acclaimed ICO, the game allows players to take the role of a young man seeking the truth of an ancient tale of power hidden in a mystical land. Shadow of the Colossus is a majestic journey through ancient lands to seek out and destroy gigantic mythical beasts. With a trusty horse at your side, players explore the spacious lands and unearth each towering Colossus creature. The uneasy task of defeating a Colossus relies on intelligent puzzle solving and action oriented gameplay. Armed with strong wits, a mystical sword and a sturdy bow, players use cunning and strategy to topple each behemoth.

Wow dude....

If this movie gets well made (I mean, REALLY well made) it could become huge.

Almost a whole film with one hero and his horse fighting amazing giant creatures... it could be epic. I hope this one doesn't get screwed up.

That's what she said.

I think it'd be alright...although I'd expect some new locations, different creatures, and a slightly different storyline/at least a "weaved" storyline throwing around a little bit more dialogue...but yeah a movie set in that universe could be pretty good.
Ico would be a cool 'prequel' too, definately.
