Need Help Identifying A Story
I read a horror story a long time ago that I want to find again. It was about a boy who collected butterflies and moths who finds a peculiar caterpillar, raises it until it becomes a large, unsettling moth, then kills the moth for his collection. The moth's body creates a strange stain on the wall, and the boy begins to hear what sounds like huge wings beating outside his window at night. The stain continues to grow and the wing noises get louder. It eventually ends badly for the boy as the unnatural moth takes its revenge.
Ring a bell for anyone? I keep thinking the story was just called "The Moth" or "The Killing Jar" or something like that, but I don't think that's right. Any help is appreciated. :) |

I finally found this story after more than 25 years. :) The story is called 'The Cocoon' by John B.L. Goodwin. It appeared in one of the Alfred Hitchcock Presents anthologies (Stories for Late at Night). I just finished reading it downstairs in the chilly living room, with the curtains open. Now I'm back up here where it's warm and the curtains are closed. I hope nothing starts flapping against the windows. ;)
