Excellent List Guys!!
Some great films there....but a few have me scratching my head....Rashomon???..never considered that horror myself,,and if your including "art" films like "The Virgin Spring"....Did you guys consider Dryer's Day of Wrath? Finally how can you leave out: Curse of the Demon The Mummy's Hand The Thing From Another Planet Dracula's Daughter Plague of the Zombies The Devil Rides Out Burn Witch Burn Just picking.....you can't include everything. Fantastic choices overall

We did pre-1968 as that meant films that were forty years old or older. A lot of suggestions came and went. Burn, Witch Burn just didn't make the final cut. The Virgin Spring is a dark fairy tale and was very influential on things like Last House on the Left. Night of the Demon was included. Dracula's Daughter has its moments, but there were so many representations of Universal that diversity really had to be retained.

ok just to chime in. I gotta stir the pot. How did the debate go on these classics?
The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942).......Chaney Jrs only go as the Monster Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)...the first monster rally The 7th Voyage of Synbad (1958)....the great monsters should qualify it. Spider Baby (1964).........essential..much better than some other choices The Abominable Snowman (1957).......yeah it's good enough Peeping Tom (1960)..........no way this is left out!!!! Diabolique (1955).......there's no psycho without this classic! Horror Hotel (1960) I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957).....the drive in teen horror was born. It Came From Outer Space (1953)........ The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961).....great, great movie more to come as I think of them Kudos for including X-The Unknown an under appreciated classic.. and Tarantula (essential) This is not a criticism....I'm just interested in how the debate went on some of these great flicks. We only had 100 spots to fill for every horror film made before 1970. That was a lot of ground to cover in only 101 (I actually think it ended up 102) titles- silents, foreign films, Universal, indies, the Corman/AIP era, Hammer, etc. A lot of cuts had to be made. It would have been great to include all the Universal series, but we couldn't, so we went with what we felt were the highest quality of the series.
Peeping Tom & Spider Baby are both represented on some of the other of our Top 100's, so we didn't feel the need to have them on the Vintage 101. 7th Voyage of Sinbad- more of a fantasy. It Came From Outer Space & The Day the Earth Caught Fire- sci-fi. The Vintage 101 was compiled by a panel (of which I was a member) of varying tastes and viewpoints, which resulted in a list of titles which obviously will not mirror each individual's personal list, but does, we think, offer a great primer of horror films pre-1970.

I love seeing WEST OF ZANZIBAR on this one. It's one of my favorite films of all time, a real heart-breaker. There are a couple here I still need to see.
