Angus Scrimm - The Tall man/ Phantasm Series

The evil screen villain known as The Tall Man in Phantasm and the following sequels was born Lawrence Rory Guy at Kansas City, MO in in 1926.

In his teens Scrimm moved to California and studied drama at USC.

Believe it or not in his first film he played another tall man in the persona of Abraham Lincoln. It was actually an educational film for the Enclclopedia Britannica.

This film led him to a steady career in theatre, television and films. During these early years he used his real name. He changed his name to Angus Scrimm when he played in Phantasm.

Some of Angus Scrimm's film roles were:

As Rory or Lawrence Guy:

Scream Bloody Murder (1973) as Dr. Epstein

A Piece Of The Action (1977) as Monk

Witches Brew (1980) as Carl Gordon

As Angus Scrimm:

Phantasm (1979) as The Tall Man

The Lost Empire (1985) as Dr. Sin Do/ Lee Chuck

Phantasm 2 (1988) as The Tall Man

Mindwarp (1990) as Seer/Systems Operator

Subspecies (1991) as King Vladislav

Munchie (1993) as The Undertaker

Deadfall (1993) as Dr. Lyme

Phantasm 3: Lord Of The Dead (1994) as The Tall Man

Phantasm 4: Oblivion (1998) as The Tall Man

Legend Of The Phantom Rider (2002) as The Preacher

The Off Season (2004) as Ted

Satanic (2006) as Dr. Barbary

Automations (2006) as The Scientist

I Sell The Dead (2008) as Dr. Quint

Satan Hates You (2010) as Dr. Michael Gabriel

Disciples (2012-Direct To Video) as Winston

The director of the original Phantasm film that Mr. Scrimm acted in was Don Coscarelli. Coscarelli was only 18 years old at the time he produced this film.

By now you are probably wondering what type of person this villain really is in real life. Right?

Just the opposite of what you seen on the screen.

Mr. Scrimm was also a journalist and writer before he became an actor. He has been an editor and writer for TV Guide, Cinema Magazine, The Los Angeles Herald Examiner and other publications.

Scrimm has writen liner notes for many LP records and compact discs from classical to jazz and has been nominated several times for Grammy Awards in this area.

He won a Grammy Award for Best Album notes -Classical in the year 1974. The album was entitled: : The Classical Erich Wolfgand Krngold.

But you won't find them written under the name of Angus Scrimm. He uses his real name: Rory or Lawrence Guy.

I have all of the Phantasm's films and have enjoyed Mr. Scrimm in all of them. I also enjoyed his performance in Legend Of The Phantom Rider as well.

I will have to look through my LP's and CD's and see I can find any liner notes by "The Tall Man".

As I mentioned, I had sent some scanned photos for him to sign and he actually called me inquiring about my mailing address. I had about a 15 minutes chat with him. A very nice person., he signed my photos and cards and sent some of his own as well.

But tonight when I go to bed I will leave might light on and pull the covers over my head and just hope that the tall man doen't appear.

Awesome article, thanks for sharing Duchess.

These are the type of actors that I love to here stories about.... They have a solid body of work but have one character that ultimately defines them as an actor. Instead of slowly breeding contempt for that character, as happens with so many actors, they embrace it and appreciate its place and importance in their career along with the love the fans have for it. Huge fan of the Phantasm movies and have seen a ton of interviews/ commentaries with Scrimm and he always comes across as a gentleman.
