Horror movies for varying interests
I have a dilema. I am inviting a few friends over for a movie marathon, and they all have such different tastes. Some clash, others don't. I want to find a good selection so everyone can enjoy the night. Here are a breakdown of the people I will be inviting.
#1 - A gore junkie. A movie doesn't have to be good at all, just have lots of gore and she will jump around screaming about how godly awesome it was. She loves asian horror too, and has seen a good amount of it. Low budget movies also. She finds good in just about everything. For example, she liked Cradle of Fear and DeadBirds. Some she really liked were House of 1000 Corpses, Audition, ICHI THE KILLER for sure, and she even managed to find a redeeming quality in Stay Alive. --- #2 - A girl who likes thrillers and smart horrors more then others. Her opinions sway depending on who she's around, so this should be fun. She loves SAW 1 & 2 - and movies such as Red Eye and National Treasure. She likes gore, but is not a gorehound. She likes twists better. --- #3 - The critic of the bunch. She refuses to even say SAW 1 or SAW 2 had a single redeeming quality to them. She's the type who says "I want my life back" after seeing a bad movie. She's is not afraid to tell you how awful certain movies are. She didn't like The Shining, Fear of the Dark or Nightbreed. She also thought House of 1000 Corpses was trash and just plain porn. She likes foriegn movies, and comedies too. Some she found awesome were Dogma and Kung-fu Hustle. I'm trying to find a combination of movies that can please all of them, even if they are all not pleased with ONE specific movie, but can find something good about any one of the lineup. I don't really know WHAT to show. So far my only idea is The Devil's Rejects. |

Frailty is a quality film, definately appeal to friend #2 & #3, and probably the other one if she has any sense.
Have you thought about a Dario Argento film? Tenebrae and Deep Red are good ones.

Dead End would be a great choice for #2 and #3, but it would probably really piss off #1. Alot of gore is hinted at, but next to nothing is shown.
I really cant think of many gore movies that would satisfy the others...Dagon maybe? Not a whole lot of gore, but I think that's the closest you'd come to pleasing everyone.

I strongly recommend these: WILD ZERO and BELOW.
WILD ZERO will please the lover of zany movies, it features gore, music, retro and punk mentalities, and a Monty Python sort of sense of comedic absurdity. You'll probably hit a bunch of bases with that one. BELOW will probably satisfy the refined horror fan who likes story-conscious thrillers, it is a top-notch 10 out of 10 ghost movie with great special effects. In my opinion it's better than ALL the ghost movies released in the last 10 years or so. Tight, sharp, busy, scary, well written and acted. People are all different of course, as your description of your party guests seems to demonstrate, so it's not likely that ONE movie will please all your guests. But a couple of movies carefully chosen might make 'em all smile eventually. Last edited by filmmaker2; 06-05-2006 at 04:54 PM. |

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (kinda offbeat and arthouse + healthy doses of nastiness n splatter) or Maniac (has the serial killer/thriller thing going on + a bunch of gore). Perhaps Pyscho, The Exorcist or M if they haven't already seen it. But yeh I can't recomend Devil's Rejects enough. Fuckin' brilliant. |

Scream.
It's fairly gory, (mostly blood)...(a lot of blood) It's funny, has twists, it's classified as a thriller in a way, it has twists, has a bit of "smart" (not much though).

I agree. Re-Animator would probably appeal to all three. Of course, you may just wanna throw #3 in a closet with hungry rats! Didn't like the Shining but thought Kung-Fu Hustle was "awsome?" Jeez!

Kairo/Pulse 3 Extremes Deep In The Woods Calvaire/The Ordeal Most of these titles are newer(and all foreign),they're all I could think of off hand.By the sounds of it your "group" seems pretty jaded as far as horror films are concerned so you'll play hell trying to find something new. I recommened these films...they have something for everyone.Hope this helps. :)
