Love almost all his books (including Dreamcatcher which some seem to hate, but I likes). But to recommend only three books for some to pickup and give King a try:
(1) The Stand - the ultimate struggle of good vs. evil, after almost all of the world has perished from a super-disease. (2) The Dark Tower series - a mixture of western/sci-fi/horror/ mystery/romance. (3) Rose Madder - psycho cop beating his wife for years, couple times nearly to death, she finally grows some balls and leaves, the psycho cop husband tracks her down to kill her, some wierd twists near the end (as always).

I'm a fan of all four short story anthologies, and I thought Salem's Lot was probably his best novel of the ones I've read.
