The Modern 90s Horror Tournament

The downfall of the Horror Empire...is what avid lovers of the genre tout the 90s as. Back when I completed the Golden 80s Horror tournament, there were a few suggestions regarding 90s Horror, but were dismissed saying that nearly all 90s Horror was crap.

But...is that true? Between me and you, folks of HDC...lets find out.

A massive total of 192 movies make this tournament, and to weed out the decent ones from the overall "black cauldron of the 90s", we will start off with a Qualifying Round. Each match will have 3 movies out of which the winner will advance on to the Round of 64. Same rules apply as in my other tournaments - first to 5 wins the match, but if I am not online to declare the winner, voting may continue on.

So, rewinding the clock 18 years back...onward we wade, into the most disappointing decade of Horror, in search of the modern gems which managed to carve their own niche and make a significant contribution to the genre, critically or popularly.

Qualifying Round, Match 1

First movie to 5 votes wins...

Addams Family Values. It's funny and clever, while Species is not scary and Curse of Michael Myers is a bloody disaster. Species is more or less a Fred Olen Ray movie with a big budget. It doesn't merge sexploitation and violence nearly well enough to get away with itself.

I just wouldn't class the Addams family values as horror. Amazing film and one of my favourites, but there is nothing scary about it. So that just leaves species and curse of michael myers. Species was good and I enjoyed halloween (Except they made it an impossible storyline as opposed to the first ones where it could have actually happened). Hmmmmm. I've just flipped a coin and it came out as heads so...Halloween : The curse of Michael Myers.
