BLAIR WITCH *** SPOILERS ***

Don't even start with me if you haven't seen it and clicked on this damn thread anyway.

I know a handful caught it over the weekend. I want to get into it here.

I really fucking enjoyed it. Like REALLY enjoyed it. I loved getting the see here in little glimpses, I loved that she looked kind of like the stick figures.

Stoked that so much time was spent in the house and not too much time was spent rehashing what we already knew.

VERY happy they didn't just replay coffin rock shit and they played with some fresh ideas. Loved the old camcorder mixing into the modern headsets.

Also! THE FUCKING TENTS ATTACKING THEM WHILE THEY WHERE RUNNING WAS AWESOME! Very pleased.

Glad you liked it, Jake! I did too, and I've seen it twice now.

I'll start with a few minor complaints, so I can get the bad stuff out the of the way and move on to the positive. Too many jump scares. They are at times effective but I don't think half of them were necessary or all that scary. It's kind of annoying, but in the filmmakers defense, they do acknowledge the plethora of jumps with a bit of humor. At one point, and after the four thousandth time a character is scared by another character popping up in their camera lens, someone says " I wish you'd stop doing that". I LOL'd, so good on them for poking some fun at themselves. One other small complaint is that the new film really doesn't enhance, embellish or expand on the original legend of Elly Kedward/The witch.
Yeah there is a weeeee little bit about the stones and how they were tied to Kedwards limbs as she hung from the tree, but that's not enough for me. I would have liked a little more insight or innovation regarding the legend itself.

Okay, on to the good stuff!
This movie is fast paced, and I mean fast. We hit the ground running and it never stops. Even before we get to the woods, the movie motors along splendidly. The characters seem real, not one dimensional cutouts, and their affection and concern( love, even ) for each other makes the deadly events even harder to bear. These people acted like friends, not movie characters.
The end is NUTS! I loved how they ratchet up the tension as we close in on the finale, and the lead actresses performance at that point is really top notch. The glimpses we see of the witch are perfect, never giving us too much but always giving us just enough. I agree Jake, her stick figure-ish appearance is a great choice. The tent chase worked really well for me and I wouldn't have minded another 60 seconds of that!
One thing that I truly loved happens at the end, just before our lead character (James) enters the house. We hear screaming coming from the house, and it's clearly a females voice. Now, I might be wrong, but some of those screams sounded exactly like Heather's terrified screams from the original film. In fact, I'm almost certain we hear her yell "Josh", precisely as we heard her in the original. I LOVED that moment in the film.

Anyway, I'm done. So, who else has some opinions on this sucker?

I really enjoyed the movie quite a bit.
The characters were more likable than the characters in the first movie.
They explain a bit of lore and backstory.
However it did feel a little too similar to the original movie and some of the scares are a little weak.

The main reason I liked the movie was the brilliant final act. A lot of horror films tend to have weak finales but Blair Witch has one of the most intense and scary endings to a horror film I've ever seen.

I also really like the time manipulation, paranoia and mind games that the Blair Witch does.
I'm pretty sure that Blair Witch is exactly what we think it is but I couldn't get a specific thought out of my mind. What's the deal with the lights??

This is just a small thought that crossed my mind but what if the Blair Witch is actually an alien?!
CRAZY RIGHT!!

It's a very dumb idea and probably not what was intended but I noticed little details in the movie that made me think about aliens instead of witches.

The lights at the end of the movie are never explained and could be lights from a ship.
A common thread amongst alien abductee stories is the loss of time and time manipulation which also appear in the movie.
We constantly hear these weird almost animalistic noises in the woods. Possibly a noise from a ship or alien noises.

These little details seem a bit more alien than supernatural to me. MAYBE the Blair Witch is actually harvesting humans and the whole Blair Witch idea is pretty much just mass hysteria accidently created by the media. (an idea somewhat explored in Blair Witch 2)

It was just a random thought I had while watching the film once. On repeat viewing it might appear to be what it is.
Anyway, I enjoyed the movie and can't wait to watch it again.

I can agree, I wish there would have been some more expansion. I wish there would have been another chunk interviews with the locals. I assume the long legs and arms of the witch is a direct result of the stones tied to her limbs. I think that was fun. The humor was well played, perfect black friend/white friend banter. I commented out load in the theater that they where actually killing off the black guy first and the black guy next to me broke out laughing. Im expecting to catch a lot of things in my second watching when it hits Netflix or wherever it ends up. But I think the ending holds tons of little surprises. I love that the ending is the video that led him there. I think eventually it will come to light that the original group is living in some sort of cycle in the house and the new groups killing is happening alongside the original groups.

So I watched this movie yesterday and I have to admit that I was actually positively surprised. I wasn't excepting much, after the trailer I thought that it will be too much over the top. But actually it was quite good, I didn't like the tents flying around though. The Blair witch, well, she was more looking like a monster than a witch to me but hell, I don't care, she still looked awesome. Was just expecting a bit more of a classy witch I guess. I just didn't understand the fact, that the witch won't hurt you if you don't look at her and how the guy knew that in the first movie. It felt a bit forced to find an explanation why this guy was looking the wall.
After all it's just my opinion, I still enjoyed this movie very much and nearly shit myself in the cinema when James was running inside the house :D

It takes some looking into the lore of the witch and Rustin Parr to understand the standing in the corner deal. They tried to develop it because that was a huge question mark at the end of the original. Rustin Parr, the killer, would take two boys to the attic to kill them, he would stand one in the corner because he didn't like them looking at him while he did it. Rustin was possessed by the witch I believe so it only makes sense that it was the witch who preferred the victims to look away. Its a loose thread but its there. Lol.

I was at the perfect age when the original came out to have gotten caught up in all the hype and read a lot about it then.

Well I'm from Germany so I already miss out alot, plus when the movie came out I was like 10 so my English was poor back then. I just remember that we were afraid cause of the story being "real" :D
